Sam Nunn's daughter may run for Senate
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 08:35 AM by Skinner
Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Michelle Nunn, founder and executive director of Hands On Atlanta and daughter of former Sen. Sam Nunn, is contemplating a run for Sen. Zell Miller's seat.

"I've been giving it serious consideration," Nunn, 36, said Tuesday. "A message that needs to be heard is that Democrats need a new generation of leaders. People are looking for some new voices in the political sphere."

Former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young has said he is seriously considering running.

Nunn said she will be meeting with Young on Friday to discuss their respective plans and to talk about the future of the Democratic Party in Georgia. --

2. My feeling exactly!
He got royally screwed by Carter back in the day. I thought he made a great decision when he decided to talk to the PLO. Unfortunately, it cost him his job, but it finally gave the PLO enough credibility that they were eventually brought to the table in the mideast.

Very smart and articulate guy. I'm surprised he didn't run sooner. I also wouldn't be surprised if Zell changed parties.

8. Speaking of Andrew Young
I have always wanted to know what it was that he did wrong during the Carter administration. I just hear that he lost his job but what did he do? He talked with the PLO, is that all?

3. Hope she's not carbon copy of her father...
He was a bit on the establishment side for me... his stink about gays in the military was quite harmful (Sam Nunn's, that is.).

5. I'd love to see Andrew Young run too
I don't know Michelle Nunn but I'd rather have a Democrat running than just giving up the seat to the repukes. I think the Andrew Young ticket would have a great base. Lots of people know him and his record. He would stand out. Glad to see that we have some hope there. Assuming of course the e-vote fraud issue gets worked out, because after all we know now that Max Cleland was probably cheated out of his senate race.

And if not, why not?

7. If Democrats win this seat it should be considered a pickup
though I'd love to see Max Cleland come back, but only if he is prepared to get in the mud and expose these chickenhawks for who they are.

9. When DeLay told the Young Rethugs that...
They should close their eyes and try to imagine Sen Kennedy landing in a flight suit, Max wrote, "This country deserves more patriots like Senator Kennedy, not more chicken hawks like you who never served."

Sounds ready.

10. I hate seeing this. I hate children trying for power which their parents
had attained. Sure there's exceptions but most have been spoon fed and don't have anywhere near the abilities that their parents had. They are just being promoted by family name and not their abilities.

Junior, Jeb, and Neil are perfect examples of idiots who could never have had passed college without their family laying bribes down.

11. I hope that Michelle is not a homophobe like her father was
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 01:46 AM by IndianaGreen
Sam Nunn and John Warner were the two leading crusaders against gays in the military. Sam thought that bunking next to a gay sailor would get you raped.

What a homophobe!

12. You miss the point. Obviously you've never been in the service.

Openly gay male soldiers would unquestionably be a severe problem in the military. Why? Because, just for starters, effectively they are a different sex than both the males and the females. Therefore they would require an additional segregation of bathroom, showering, and bunking facilities. But there aren't sufficient numbers of them to warrant that kind of enormous added expense and inconvenience.

Men and women do not shower with each other or use the same open bathrooms in the service for obvious reasons. For most of them--especially most woment--it would be a situation of enormous discomfort. The same would be true then for men showering with other openly gay men, for the same reasons. Surely this is understandable to you?

Don't ask / Don't tell was the right policy. Gays can serve, but not if they proclaim their sexual orientation.

Being against the original proposal--of permitting openly gay soldiers to serve without condition--was not necessarily homophobic. It was recognizing that such a policy would obviously cause severe, potentially crippling problems.

13. Obviously you are wrong!
Since I am a veteran and I know that the same arguments being made to keep gays from serving in the military, in which gays have served since the War of Independence, are the same pretext used to keep the armed forces segregated prior to 1949.
