Senate Passes Resolution on Iraqi Abuses
By Vicki Allen
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Senate on Monday unanimously passed a resolution condemning the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners, as Congress awaited arrival of new images of abuses of detainees at a U.S.-run prison.

~snip~

The Pentagon "promptly took action to investigate the allegations of abuse," Frist said, and is reviewing its policies for handling prisoners.

But Sen. Edward Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat, blamed the scandal on Rumsfeld and other top Pentagon officials he said shrugged off repeated warnings on the prison.

Kennedy also accused Republican President Bush of presiding "over America's steepest and deepest fall from grace in the history of our country." He called "the tragedy unfolding in Iraq ... the direct result of a colossal failure of leadership."

1. Mistreatment? Abuse?
The correct word is TORTURE.

3. The Pentagon "promptly took action"?
I understand that the pictures we've seen are anywhere from four to six months old, and something began to get done about it (i.e. convening courts martial) only the week after the pictures came out.

I guess that "prompt" in Frist world. For the rest of us, it looks pretty negligent.

But I AM glad to see that the Senate passed a non-binding resolution against torture. Put it in the Big Book of Bold Senate Resolutions next to the ones approving motherhood and apple pie. The major question remains:

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT?

Kennedy also accused Republican President Bush of presiding "over America's steepest and deepest fall from grace in the history of our country."

That says it all, doesn't it? There should be billboards across America with Shrub's picture and that line printed below it in big red letters. I wonder if the brain-dead flag wavers would finally wake up after seeing it?

In any case, thank you Ted Kennedy! :)

on edit: oooooh ... my first post with a gold star next to my name. That feels good! B-)

8. Kennedy is almost right
It wasn't a failure of leadership. Bush quite deftly led the nation into this disgrace and quagmire. He insisted he knew where he was going despite all the advice and warnings. That's not a failure--that's a Bush-style success.
