New Bush space speech planned
WASHINGTON, May 10 (UPI) -- President George W. Bush plans to make a major speech early this summer defending his plan for a new U.S. space exploration initiative, administration sources told United Press International.

Sources said although drafting the speech -- termed a vigorous call to support the president's new space exploration policy he announced last January -- has not yet begun, aides have been narrowing prospective dates and venues.

"The president wants to speak about space," a senior administration source said.

The speech apparently will be timed to coincide with a report by the presidential commission appointed earlier this year to review the space plan and seek broad public comment. The commission, headed by former Pentagon executive Pete Aldridge and featuring leaders from industry, non-profit groups and the military, is expected to release its report in July.

4. To Infinity and Beyond!
If we can't get there just yet, why don't we commission a report on space exploration and have it come out just when the Democrats are having their convention.

Yeah, that's the ticket, no one will suspect that it's a shameless political stunt. /sarcasm

They have zero interest in exploration unless they decide a buck could be made. His buddies in the armaments industries will make a killing arming the new frontier. After all, everybody on earth is already armed to the teeth...need a new market.

13. giving up on global military domination?
A space science program was advocated in old foreign policy planning as a way to maintain high high-tech outlays during periods of reduced arms development.

It seems more likely he will use it as a budget category for star-wars programs to say we're investing in science instead of showing it all in the defense budget.

15. Wallace Shawn...
Edited on Mon May-10-04 07:34 PM by dnvechoes
I was at a screeing of "My Dinner with Andre" with Wally Shawn and Andre Gregory a couple months ago at UCSB.

Someone in the audience asked what they thought of BushCo. Andre is a great Liberal as we all know (and Kucinich supporter!).

When Wally answered he said he was floored by what he reads in the newspaper. He said something like "I'm still getting used to the crazy stuff he did 3 or 4 months ago, then today I pick up the paper and read that he wants to invade Mars???"

Oh we had to laugh like hell.

Makes sense, though. Iraq didn't work out so well, so may as well try somewhere else.

16. Is he planning this before or after his New Bush Steroid Speech?
His SOTU fatwah: "The use of performance-enhancing drugs like steroids in baseball, football, and other sports is dangerous, and it sends the wrong message -- that there are shortcuts to accomplishment, and that performance is more important than character. So tonight I call on team owners, union representatives, coaches, and players to take the lead, to send the right signal, to get tough, and to get rid of steroids now."

I've been too busy to check...is it still a problem, or have we gotten rid of them?

I mean ALL of them. THEN we can talk about Mars, dammit.

And it simply amazes me that he actually believes he can do such a "collection" while destroying this earth!!!

He is like an inside-out wear on humanity.

He and his evil beast of a cabal. I swear, they are the worst evil to visit the 21st century. I suppose I should be glad that the world is keeping up, this time,...and will extinguish such arrogance.

I am not arrogant,...I am not even confident,...but, I do believe that this "disease" will be treated before it can spread.

He isn't. He's set aside what amounts to be around 1% of the actual costs of sending humans to Mars by the most conservative estimates.

$1B won't cut it, this is clearly an election year ploy, and an insanely poor planned one.

34. Ah, the crinkle of the Tinfoil!
I have a reputation for going easy on the tinfoil, but 2004: A Bush Odyssey has very little to do with space exploration, IMHO.

If you've noticed, right after Bush's last fly-by of the issue, funding for all space-based environmental science programs was slashed, including the series of programs designed to monitor global climate change.

As they say in Texas, powerful interestin', innit?

Why, with the money we'll save from these budget cuts, that $300 tax cut can be expanded to $302.78! And, as we're being evacuated from Boston as the snow and ice accumulate during the Great Climatic Snap-Back, we can take hope that the Raleigh-Durham Red Sox have finally been playing winning baseball.

54. Mind the source - UPI = Washington Times = Reverend Moon
"Nearly bankrupt and with only a skeletal staff, once-venerated United Press International found a financial savior yesterday in News World Communications Inc., owner of the Washington Times, which purchased the wire service's assets for an undisclosed amount.

UPI was a formidable competitor to the Associated Press until the 1980s, when it had 1,500 reporters and 200 bureaus around the globe. Since 1992, it has been owned by six Saudi Arabian families and now has 157 employees in Washington, London, Latin America and Asia--and few clients.

The wire service's new owner is controlled by the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, founder of the Unification Church and the conservative voice behind the Times's editorials."
