NYC police security estimate for GOP convention now $76 million
http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/ny-bc-ny--gopconvention0510may10,0,499250.story?coll=ny-ap-regional-wire

NEW YORK -- Security costs for the Republican National Convention this summer will hit $76 million, police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Monday.

Just last month, the estimate was $47 million to $65 million.

The estimated cost of police overtime alone will be a staggering $59 million for the four-day gathering, Kelly told the City Council's Public Safety Committee.

The city, just emerging from successive years of multibillion-dollar budget gaps, will likely have to pick up at least two-thirds of the convention's security cost _ which is even more than the $64 million organizers are raising to bring the convention to the city. No host committee funds would be used for security.

3. Not correct...
the security for the Olympic Games in Athens this Summer will top 1 Billion...

The Athens Games are the biggest security effort in Olympic history, with the price tag reaching nearly $1.2 billion. Organizers will receive assistance from NATO, and a seven-nation security advisory panel includes the United States, Britain and France.

2. GOP will blame
1) Protestors
2) Police Unions (Overtime pay?!? Are you kiddin'?)

Hopefully, those two groups will unite in order to show the GOPers a real nice NYC time.

We're waiting here in NYC, you fucking pukes. Looking forward to seeing ya!

4. Repukes are just way too "high maintenance"
They cost the whole country too much $$. Kick 'em all out of office, and let's start over.

5. FUCKING ASSHOLES. They never delivered the 9/11 relief funds
NYPD had to pay for Operation Atlas by themselves during last year's Code Orange when the Administration paid for a 24 hour patrol of DC and effin' DISNEYLAND. The city is broke and they are exploiting it even more.

9. Wouldn't the DNC cost about the same?
Not looking for an arguement here. I live in the Boston area and wonder why one would cost more than another,if that is the case.

11. I doubt that it would cost the same.
I would think that the occupant of the White House gets more protection than a candidate for the presidency, and Bush tends to travel with enormous security details (like the 700 people he took to the U.K.). In addition, other members of the current administration will be at the G.O.P. convention -- not just members of Congress, as will be found in Boston, but cabinet members. Add in Bush's need to keep protestors out of sight, and you come up with a greater need for security than the Democrats will have.
