Speech met with disbelief [Al Jazeera]
Speech met with disbelief

Tuesday 11 May 2004, 1:49 Makka Time, 22:49 GMT

Arab commentators reacted with shock and disbelief to US President George Bush's robust backing of Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

Critics had called for Rumsfeld to quit following the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal.

But analysts, editors and ordinary Arabs were united in their condemnation of Bush on Monday when he said the nation owed the defence secretary a "debt of gratitude".

"After the torture and vile acts by the American army, President Bush goes out and congratulates Rumsfeld. It's just incredible. I am in total shock," said the editor of the influential Algerian national daily al-Watan.

<snip>

Analysts have said the damage from images seen worldwide of soldiers abusing naked Iraqi prisoners in Abu Ghuraib prison would be indelible, incalculable and a gift to al-Qaida leader Usama bin Ladin.

"Mr Rumsfeld would have certainly lost his job if the prisoners were American"

Also had a clip of Bush talking when American soldiers were captured last year. 'I expect them to be treated humanely as the Geneva Convention. And if the prisoners are not it will be a War Crime and we'll track them down for justice.' (paraphrase 99%).

Let's see the Repuke Crime Family and the American Whore Media Crime Family dance around this one!

6. we really need to keep in mind
that they are saying "we are not sorry". That we stand by this behavior. It's a kick in the face. A blatant and slightly undercurrent remark intended to let the world know that if they don't like it they can go to hell. I believe this is a deliberate attempt once again to see how far that they can go.

I believe they will get away with it.

...and don't bundle campaign contributions, so the Arab commentators are irrelevant.

And they worship the wrong God, too.

they worship the wrong God..I was under the impression that there is only one God. By calling theirs the wrong God, you are also calling ours the wrong God.

10. General Boykin told me they worship the wrong God...
Edited on Tue May-11-04 12:54 AM by Davis_X_Machina
...right here:

Lt. Gen. William G. "Jerry" Boykin, the new deputy undersecretary of Defense for intelligence, is a much-decorated and twice-wounded veteran of covert military operations.....

Yet the former commander and 13-year veteran of the Army's top-secret Delta Force is also an outspoken evangelical Christian who appeared in dress uniform and polished jump boots before a religious group in Oregon in June to declare that radical Islamists hated the United States "because we're a Christian nation, because our foundation and our roots are Judeo-Christian ... and the enemy is a guy named Satan."

Discussing the battle against a Muslim warlord in Somalia, Boykin told another audience, "I knew my God was bigger than his. I knew that my God was a real God and his was an idol."

General Boykin outranks both of us.

So there...

13. Ironic to say the muslim god is an idol...
as muslims stick to the Commandment about not having "graven images" of god unlike most forms of Christianity.

23. Welcome to DU!
I think that the post above was meant in a satirical way. It's generally the consensus here at DU that nobody has a lock on the "right God." We've noticed that the W administration doesn't share this tolerant outlook. Their narrow view is often the target of our scorn.

You'll get used to us. We're sarcastic a lot around here.

Apparently this kind of thing is SOP at home. in our great nation.

Rumsfeld squealed like a stuck pig when the Iraqis captured the Americans last year, all kinds of stuff about the Geneva convention.
You would have almost thought that he actually believed in it.

7. They're not the only ones who are in disbelief.
I was simply stunned today when I read Yahoo news. The whole event took my breath away.

The only thing that was missing was that Bush congratulated Rumsfeld for torturing the Iraqis. They have absolutely lost their minds.

These people, including Rummy, are not all there.

24. Looks like the Guardian noticed that guy in sunglasses too.
I wonder if they're trying to decide if he is CIA or MI5. My guess is neither. He's a $1,000 a day "contractor," well-traveled in Guatemala, El Salvadore, Bosnia, and Chechnya.

18. Mr Rumsfeld would have lost his job if the prisoners were American?
Actually no, I don't think he would. The whole nudity and bag-over-head bit is apparently common in US prisons and you never hear a damned thing about US prisoners' rights. In fact, a number of the administrators at Abu Ghraib were Reserve troops who operated prisons in their civilian capacities stateside; presumably they'd done all this before.

There are few more disenfranchised groups in the US than prisoners - hell, prison rape isn't just tolerated, its the subject of polite-society jokes. In fact, the whole concept that convicted criminals might just still have rights is often considered suspect. I don't know whether its because of the racial and socio-economic composition of the prisoner pool or whether its because of the savage nature of a very few prominent crimes, but talking heads like to denigrate the entire US prison population as animals. With that attitude, of course there are abuses, of courses the recidivism rate is well over what it should be, and of course are prison wardens embarass us when they try on Iraqis what they've been doing to American citizens for years.

Misappropriating the blood and treasure of the American people for one's own benefit is a cruel and unusual and immoral act.

This administration totally owes this country a huge debt!!!

22. Another "Bring em on" moment
that will fall flat for the miserable purpose of winning votes here but succeed admirably in getting more of our troops killed or worse.

And if the media gives even the slightest impression that this hunky dory with all of America we will have the terrorist factor and international enmity increased to the boiling point.

Maybe * wants this for November, but he's nuts and the number one danger to America.

The task of course is not to go out and buy guns but to get under the somnolent gears of American justice and democracy and heave, all together, and get civilization working again.

...he's not going anywhere. it would be like mickey mouse trying to fire walt disney. the only way rummie is going is if the neocon cult running washington meets and decides his departure is in THEIR best interests.

People just don't get it. gee-dubya is probably the most expendable person--after colon blow, of course--in this administration. He's just puppet-boy... all hat, no cattle.
