The father of slain child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey is running for a seat in Michigan's Legislature.

John Ramsey, who has lived for years under a cloud of suspicion in the death of his daughter, told USA TODAY he is running for the Michigan House of Representatives because his family wants to put its notoriety to work for the public good.

"We've been talking for a number of years about what we are supposed to do with this unique platform we've been given," he said in an interview Monday. "I thought this is how I could really make a difference."

Ramsey, 60, will formally announce his candidacy today in Charlevoix, Mich., where his family has a summer home.

They've got quite a concentration of power and money. It's pretty ugly. While seemingly under the radar Michigan is going to be a battleground on so many fronts it's remarkable.

The Ramseys are living in Charlevoix full-time now.

There is no way that the folks in the 105th will elect that man. DeVos and Ramsey are demonstrating that they think the voters are morons. People there are insulted. Family and friends (some are Republicans) from Charlevoix and the area say the word carpetbagger is being bandied about.

Does he know that Republicans are not the greatest fans of due process and civil liberties? Does he realize that if conservative Republicans had their way, it would be a lot easier for Boulder Police Department to arrest the Ramseys even if the they are totally innocent? If anything, he should be running as a Democrat or Libertarian.
