Pakistan braces for return of ex-PM's brother

LAHORE, Pakistan (Reuters) - Crack police units have been deployed in the eastern Pakistan city of Lahore to stop opposition rallies in support of the planned return from exile of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's younger brother.

Shahbaz Sharif's return on Tuesday would be the biggest opposition challenge to President Pervez Musharraf since he overthrew the elder Sharif in a bloodless military coup in 1999.

Speaking in transit from Britain in Abu Dhabi, Shahbaz vowed to go ahead with his return after nearly three and a half years of exile despite the prospect of arrest on murder charges.

How the authorities will react is unclear.
