Florida town changes MLK street name
ZEPHYRHILLS, Florida (AP) -- The city council of this central Florida town tried to settle a bitter, monthslong dispute by voting Monday to change Martin Luther King Avenue back to its original name of Sixth Avenue, while keeping up street signs with both names.

Check out some of the reasons for wanting to remove King's name... pitiful.

1. Interesting comment ...
Ben Youmans, who lives on Sixth Avenue, said he opposed renaming the street because of King's opposition to the Vietnam War.

"I don't consider Martin Luther King to be an icon or a hero to be looked up to," he said.

But I'm sure he'll vote for * anyways.

2. Of course MLK isn't someone to be respected...
If it weren't for people like MLK, I'd still be able to enjoy a nice meal in public with my Aryan family and friends without laying eyes on any coloreds (except maybe the busboys). What have they done to our fine nation?!

3. Others said renaming a street after King could hurt the town's economy,
Could be, when the facts are so blatant that comedians are using them in their acts. Humor always has truth in it, otherwise it isn't funny.

As comedian Chris Rock joked: "I don't care where you live in America, if you're on Martin Luther King Boulevard, there's some violence going down. If a friend calls you on the telephone and says they're lost on Martin Luther King Boulevard and they want to know what they should do, the best response is "Run" ".

7. Maybe an NAACP-organized boycott will help clarify the economic issue.

22. For a boycott to be successful.....
People need to want to go there in the first place. As in: "The cultural delights of Zephyrville truly tempted (our group) to hold our convention there. But because of the boycott, we had to settle for San Francisco, instead." (Or New York, or Chicago, or Atlanta, or San Antonio....)

18. In St Paul, MN
Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr Blvd runs right past the state capital. Most of the state government buildings are located on the Blvd.

11. Actually
it would seem that most towns name a street in the poor, African American section town after MLK, so that they look enlightened but don't piss any white people off.

I think it's the poverty that comes before the street name, not the other way around.

These people are ludicrous.

25. good call
If it were really the case that, somehow, naming a street after King causes it to become a haven for crime, that's one hell of an interesting sociological phenomenon to look into.

"Hey, they changed Sixth Street to MLK Street. Let's go there and make some trouble!"

4. Unbelievable!
<snip>
"Others said renaming a street after King could hurt the town's economy, as streets named after him elsewhere frequently run through poor neighborhoods."
<snip>

Right, those neighborhoods are depressed because of a street name.

I got dizzy reading that.

5. these are the same gomers who
will labor for *years* to get every airport, high school and library named after Saints Reagan and Bush.

One thing the GOP understands better than us: marketing. Tear down the opposition's branding, and replace it with theirs.

That would both convey the attitude, and be easily remembered.

12. I hope this will start a trend to remove all those Ronald Reagan
Boulevards and Streets. Now, why do we want to commemorate someone who was at the helm during the Iran-Contra fiasco?

Yeah, 6 is the imperfect number, as in 666. ;-)

19. no, 6 is the smallest perfect number
The definition of perfect number - if the factors of a number (excepting the number itself) add up to the number, it is called perfect. The factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3 and 1 + 2 + 3 = 6. The next smallest one is 28. 1 + 2 + 4 + 7 + 14 = 28.
