Lawmaker: Bush Imposes Economic Sanctions on Syria
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) imposed economic sanctions on Syria on Tuesday for allegedly supporting terrorism and failing to stop anti-U.S. guerrillas from entering Iraq (news - web sites), a U.S. legislator said.

The widely expected sanctions ban U.S. exports to Syria other than food and medicine, freeze the assets of certain Syrian nationals and entities, and restrict U.S. banking relations with the Arab nation, according to the lawmaker, who attended a White House briefing on the decision.

The White House had no immediate comment and there was no word on whether the sanctions included anticipated curbs on future U.S. investments in Syria by American energy companies.

"I believe the president has signed it and the executive order will be published later today," said an administration official, who added that the sanctions resemble the embargo against Cuba. "This could really hurt their banking industry."

9. Oh, yippee
Here I was afraid we might be making too many friends around the world, good to know the shrub's nipped that in the bud! What do you suppose we'll do for allies once Tony Blair gets kicked out of office by infuriated Brits? Well, I suppose there's always Togo...

10. And Pakistan
who sold Syria the information in the first place is our Allie , our friend. And of course ,no real retribution for the Pakistani scientist! Ya gotta do what ya gotta do to make a buck, and we corporate controlled nations understand that. Only Syria wasn't part of the loop. Play with us and we'll lift the sanctions. Barf. No wonder the ME hates us. Great timing George, first we expose ourselves as torturers and now we blackmail Syria. Good thinking. This guarantees an attack before the election. Always thinking ahead ,those clever Bushies!

11. desparate times breed desparate measures
Like the end game in the final solution, there is no time now
for subtlety. Who is going to impeach them? Who is going to stop them?

The republicans cannot abandon PNAC now. Nor can they abandon the religious right, or the hyper-rich. DeLay will be pardoned, Rumsfeld will be pardoned. Cheney will be pardoned, Scooter will be pardoned. The election will be fixed. Who is going to stop them?

Only Powell has a reason to believe he might escape without punishment, but who else? There is not a one of them that should not end up in the Hague. They have brought outrage fatigue to half the American populace, and quiet rage to most of the world.
And they only have to get close enough for Florida and Texas to do their magic.
What do they have to lose? Who is going to stop them?
It is a triumph of the will for Karl Rove.
