Bush Imposes Export Ban Against Syria
Edited on Wed May-12-04 02:28 AM by damkira

WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush on Tuesday banned all U.S. exports to Syria except for food and medicine, ordering sanctions after long-standing complaints that the Middle Eastern nation was supporting terrorism and undermining U.S. efforts in Iraq.

The actions of the Syrian government - including pursuing weapons of mass destruction and occupying Lebanon - represent an "extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States," Bush said in signing an executive order imposing sanctions.

The measures also include a ban on flights to and from the United States; authorization to the Treasury Department to freeze assets of Syrian nationals and entities involved in terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, occupation of Lebanon or terror in Iraq; and restrictions on banking relations between U.S. banks and the Syrian national bank.

I especially like the "pursuing weapons of mass destruction" part. I sure hope anyone considering voting for Nader thinks that what this madman has done in his first term, think about what he will do in his second when he will not have to face the voters again. I am generally against the death penalty, but world leaders who start wars without just cause should be hung in the public square.

Edited on Wed May-12-04 03:33 AM by saigon68
rovian logic to liberate syria

because osama attacked the twin towers and syria has weapons of mass destruction, amerika must replace the evil dictator ( insert name here) who keeps the syrian people in bondage. this evil (insert name here) has stockpiled weapons of mass destruction so he could attack oklahoma in 56 minutes. the syrians must be allowed to have democracy.

Will the American people allow another war under this administration?

Will they care?

7. In addition to strongarming Cuba and Venezuela... time for an Intervention
Hey, George, we can't help but notice you've been binge invading lately. You need to stop playing war and get help. Maybe take a vacation. Clear some brush. Talk to the cows who understand you.

Consider occupational therapy. It's obvious you don't like your job, perhaps a change of careers is in order.

9. "Pursuing weapons of mass destruction and occupying Lebanon"
Oh, I could of a ME country doing the very same (o.K., they have withdrawn their troops). But this country is of course no "extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States,". So it can be given billions in aid, except being sanctioned for WMD's and occupation.

15. I don't know about that

Alot of Jews feel the same way toward the Likud lobby, and Sharon. Those that don't are probably Bush supporters. The purpose of criticizing them is to get a more sensible and less deadly foriegn policy. Creating a two state solution and concentrating on the Al Qaeda threat in Pakistan and Afghanistan is much more important to the security of our country than Iraq and Syria.

I am no fan of Sharon & the Likud. My remarks were directed to Aussie_Hillbilly's little post.

16. The meaning of my post was to point at what I think are double standards
As well, the plans for attacking/weakening Syria (as part of a larger plan) have been laid out a long time before 9/11 by some of the very same people that now are a driving force within the bush* junta.

Take a look at "A Clean Break: A New Strategy for Securing the Realm"

13. Extortion, large-scale financial fraud, jobs, ...?
Soldiers? Mercenaries? Over-priced contractors?

Don't worry, I'm sure that little Georgie will soon find a way
around the ban for any of his friends that actually want to trade
with the Syrians.

19. OK, so exports last year to Syria were $214 million
.
.
.

I expect that means a few more US jobs lost?

as for the "extraordinary threat" - ya right.

Noone needs to bring in WMDs to the US, there are millions of tons of them already there.

And the US is poisoning its own people with toxic wastes in the air, to toxins in manufacturing and testing grounds that are leaking down into their own water supply.

Wait until they start trucking radioactive waste to Yucca Mountain.

On top of that, all their forces that have been, and are now continuously exposed to their own Depleted Uranium munitions and armor are getting diseases and dying too.

The US is its own "extraordinary threat" IMO.
