1. Damn it. I was hoping things had somehow improved there.
This is terrible news. Combine this with the news that the civilian contractors have been AWOL, and it seems Bush has little interest in sustaining the morale or lives of the soldiers in Iraq. Or he is grossly incompetent and focused on profits and cronyism to realize the massive hole he is digging for himself.

22. Just a Lull to regroup and plan
One of the things that our press doesn't inform us is that a Guerilla movement operates on their own schedule not ours.

They more than likely paused to reorganize, analyze, plan, and improve operational security.

Grenade Sets U.S. Humvee Ablaze in Central Baghdad
Reuters

<BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi guerrillas fired a rocket- propelled grenade that set ablaze a U.S. military vehicle in central Baghdad on Thursday, inflicting U.S. casualties, witnesses said.

...Four soldiers were inside the vehicle when it was hit, the witnesses said. >

This appears to be a different incident. The incident in which the two soldiers were killed was reported to have occurred Wednesday night.

7. Not on television, buried in the paper
The casualty count has been going down not up in these reports, Jesus is walking through Iraq raising dead soldiers up to kill again. The reports now read 53 dead from "accidents" 56 dead from combat, my eight grade math tells me thats only 109. It was at 109 weeks ago, something is going on folks, something we're not allowed to see. I'm betting all that there are freezers filled with dead GI's, especially since the media has been banned from cvoverig the bodies coming home.
I count closer to 125 known dead, plus the pnemonia cases that makes it 127.

11. Those numbers depend on what date they started counting
If it is from the beginning of the war, the numbers are over 200 dead and over 1,000 wounded. If it is from the fall of the Saddam statue the numbers are less, if you go from the Lincoln aircraft carrier landing the numbers are less. 102 dead between 3/20 and 4/19 during the fighting. As of June 20 there were 193 dead. We lost 7 more in the 48 hours after the "Bring it on" comment. This is not counting those that died in car wrecks, or from the mysterious illness that is now infecting them. This is not counting those that died of wounds once back in the States or at a base in Europe.

12. You got that right...
I watched the news channels for quite a while this morning, and all I heard was their favortie pun, "Total Recall" over and over again. They also threw in a big helping of Kobe's 3 minute court date.

It makes me sick that these poor dead soldiers can't even be given a few seconds of air time.

14. I witnessed the exact same thing
It actually made me sick to my stomach. I really grieve for these boys and girls, and it bothers me greatly because I have two friends over in Iraq right now. I'm hoping that they are safe, but it's sad that we have pretty much moved on-- nothing to see hear...

15. I just bought The Quiet American on DVD
and watched it last night. Got up this morning and read the news from Iraq here on DU (CNN was mired in Kobe, Ahnold, and a pair of MSU students who went missing on Cape Cod), and thought to myself, Christ, is this Saigon in the 50s?

19. Did you like the movie?
I am thinking about buying it even though I have never seen it before. I like Michael Caine and Brendon Frazer (sic).

I read some articles about the film, about how relevant it is to the quagmires we were getting involved around the world.

25. Very fine film
Excellent movie. Well worth owning. Both Fraiser and Caine excell. It's a remarkable portrait of PNAC style self-delusion and regret. It was essentially supressed until it was more 'convenient' for release.

16. Buffalo Springfield anyone?
the Dover Col. said we're moving at least
1500 WIA/ month from Landstuhl to US.

Forget rotation, we need reinforcements.

Expect Drugs, Fragging, and Jordan becomes Cambodia.

and Americans don't have a clue.

Where are they going to put the Iraq Memorial?

Crawford would seem the best place. That way, the man who
caused all the deaths could look at each day.

24. al-jazeera reported this last night
they were the first news outlet to report "explosions and fighting in and around baghdad" last night, i posted this on general discussion board........but was quickly told "al-jazeera isnt reliable, its all propaganda" :eyes:

As opposed to what ? our orwellian news black out that relies on the pentagon ? :argh:

MSNBC up until 15 minutes ago was headlining news updates with Liberia, Kobe and arnold. Why isnt the Jordanian embassy explosion as big a news story as the indonesian explosion ? hmmmmmmmmmmm
