Pentagon Won't Release More Abuse Photos
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Bush administration lawyers are advising the Pentagon not to publicly release any more photographs of Iraqi prisoners being abused by U.S. soldiers, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said at the outset of a hastily arranged visit to Iraq aimed at containing the abuse scandal.

"As far as I'm concerned, I'd be happy to release them all to the public and to get it behind us," Rumsfeld told reporters traveling with him from Washington. "But at the present time I don't know anyone in the legal shop in any element of the government that is recommending that."

The government lawyers argue that releasing such materials would violate a Geneva Convention stricture against presenting images of prisoners that could be construed as degrading, Rumsfeld said en route to the Iraqi capital on a trip that was not announced in advance due to security concerns.

12. I PREDICTED THIS 5 DAYS AGO HERE
Then a couple of Yahoo disrupters floated in the DU after I called Myers a THUG, A WAR CRIMINAL, A LAP DOG OF THE CHIMP et al-- and flamed not only that thread but another one and had both shut down.

ROVE is walking on pins and needles to keep the fundy christian base intact. HE DOESN'T want the photos of the 16 year old child BEING ANALLY RAPED AND SODOMIZED TO SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY

ESPECIALLY with the " BRAVE' (tm) troops standing by filming and recording the CHILD'S PITIFUL SCREAMING AS THE RAPIST ATTACKS HIS RECTUM.

32. I predicted this too
I was sure we were being set up to NOT have the pictures released. I thought they would use National Security as the reason.

Wow, you have got to give them credit. Even I did not think they would have the gall to use the Geneva Convention as an excuse. Next thing you know they'll sight the Red Cross as an excuse, Oh wait, they already did.

How effing sick do you have to be for your mind to work like a BushBot?

34. NO ONE HAS ANY COURAGE ANYMORE
This country is sinking into a fascist abyss. This is where men with power ruthlessly rule by Fiat--

It is not the country I was born in and not the one I fought for to uphold the right of the people to be free.

Will no one who has these pictures release them to show the depths these criminals have brought us to ????????????

3. "No one I know anywhere is recommending release of photos"
That's what Rummy said this morning about the pics, according to CNN (paraphrasing). Except, CNN noted that Rummy said if it were his call, he'd release them and get it overwith.

So, actually, Don, not no one recommends their release. It appears the Defense Secy himself recommends release of the photos. Did you tell anyone what you felt, Don, or are you suddenly a nobody in Washington?

6. The News Coverage Is Inaccurate And Biased
Because its uncontrolled by the White House, reflects factual data that won't help Dimbo get re-selected and reports the truth about the secrecy and arrogance from the current administration.

They released Starr's report on Clinton the same day they got it without even reviewing it, in case there was confidential info that should not have been released.

21. Congress doesn't have the pictures.
CBS News reported that their Pentagon keepers led them into rooms for projection screenings, but that no hard copies were circulated. Once they had finished viewing them, they were led out of the room.

The Republicans in Congress have all come out against releasing the photos, and the Democrats are reverting to their old ways and slinking and slithering around the Capitol corridors, afraid to speak or be seen.

itself violated Geneva...but's let's not quibble.

So he thinks...and why shouldn't he--who is going to stop him, who is going to hold him accountable? Bush can't fire those who pull his stings.

Interesting how Rumsfeld calls for releasing them, after he shrilly complained of the leaked release of the others that got him in a momentary bind.

It isn't as if he ever complained about the torture--only that it was exposed.

I have always thought that he certifiably nuts.

19. In classic macro-economics scarcity determines value-the people want
to see the crimes committed in OUR name, the people will prosecute those responsible, the people will investigate, the people of the USA aren't like the criminals depicted, THE PEOPLE OF THE USA HAVE A REAL PROBLEM WITH THE CHAIN OF COMMAND, BUT IT IS CIVILIANS, NOT MILITARY THAT CALL THE SHOTS!

NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW.

20. So the solder who released the photos will be prosecuted?
He violated the Geneva Convention by releasing the photos. Will they turn the whistleblower over to the World Criminal Court?

So typical. The crime is to let the story out.

23. It is too bad Rumsfeld doesn't have more influence in the Pentagon
Then he would let everything out in the open. But those darn lawyers seem to have overruled him.

"Am I the head of the Defense Department? Dang, yes. Can a few lawyers overrule my wishes? Golly, of course they can."

Like he gives a flying fig about the Geneva Convention.

28. Think the same decision would be allowed if Clinton was in office?
- Somehow I doubt it. Republicans would insist on these photos being released if Clinton or Gore were in office and if they refused would threaten to impeach them for obstructing justice.

Isn't that how Clinton described "compassionate conservativism"?

Notice how Rummy is using the same thing to deflect the responsibility from himself to some unknown person in the "legal shop".
