Ingram: Mirror photos were faked
The armed forces minister, Adam Ingram, today told MPs that the Daily Mirror's "world exclusive" pictures of British soldiers abusing and urinating on Iraqis were "categorically not taken in Iraq".
In a forceful Commons performance, the minister insisted that he had not misled parliament when he claimed he not received report of abuse of Iraqi detainees by British troops from "external agencies" last week.

His "correct and honest" statement, which was later contradicted by the Red Cross and Amnesty International, had not meant that he was unaware of the allegations of abuse, which were already being investigated by the proper authorities.

He insisted that he had simply meant that he had not received anything fitting the description of a "report", a term with a "specific meaning".

1. Bullshit
Those are real, just like the Abu Ghraib pix.

Spin like a tornado, Tony, you're still a war criminal.

4. Nobody will believe him
The person who leaked the photos is a hero. No spin will deny that fact.

10. Not taken in Iraq? Does that make them fake?
Maybe they moved the prisoners to Kuwait or elsewhere.

2. Yeah
Well done Piers you fucking idiot.

Those photos were obviously a fit up. By jumping on the bandwagon immense harm has been done to those people trying to bring genuine abuses to light.

Now all those last week claiming that they must be genuine. Where is your evidence to defend these obviously sloppy fakes?

7. Are British abuse photos a Karl Rove Scam?
I agree with Spentastic. However I think it is a bizarre coincidence that the British photos miraculously appeared on the heels of the American photos. I think this STINKS OF KARL ROVE because the British photos took the heat off American abuses and smeared British efforts which up to that point were stellar compared to the American efforts.

Up to that point it was evident that the British were succeding maintaining peace in their sector. Could it be that Rove has done to the British reputation what he did to McCain's.

Blair should have heeded the maxim that "he who sleeps with dogs arises with fleas" before entering into a pact with the devil.

5. This is more pathetic than usual

Even worse than the "list of actionable items" dodge, by Rice I think.

on edit - I note he alleges the photos are fake, but doesn't actually give any evidence:

"On the Mirror pictures, the minister said that that the "strong indications" of the Royal military police investigation was that they were not genuine."

Reminds me of the difference between WMD claims and evidence. Since they were so wrong about that, I reserve the right to see conclusive evidence of their claims of fakery.

8. apparently....
at least one of the photos included pics of a truck, which was traceable from the markings on it. The truck in question wasn't in Iraq. I know on another picture that you can see the charging handle of the SA-80 rifle being used. It's an obsolete handle from an SA-80, which was ordered replaced by the MoD, and contracted out to Hechler and Koch Gmbh, when they retrofitted all British active duty weapons to the SA-80A2 configuration. If you're familiar with the SA-80 and the SA-80A2, the difference is plainly visible, and they cannot be easily confused if there's any detail to the photos. All of the weapons sent to Iraq were the A2 variant, since the original SA-80s were "retired" due to their failure to function reliably without the retrofit/upgrade.

9. One thing that is intereting is that those pictures were aesthetically and
technically very sophisticated. Was that TriPan-X they used? The lighting was great and the focus was sharp (even for the difficult light situation). A result of this was that it was easier to find the evidence they were faked.

I think it would be fascinating to find out who was behind those pictures. I bet you anything it was a right winger.
