Sharpton seeks to tap economic pain

Sharpton said, If we start talking and understanding the same tax cut that hurts a family farmer here hurts a guy in the South Bronx, then Bush is toast.

...reminded those in attendance that they "have the first shot at changing and correcting" the 2000 presidential election that he said was wrongly decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Also regarding the economy, Sharpton said that as president he would embark on a five-year plan to renovate America's infrastructure, which he said would create jobs and serve as a stimulus for "an economy that has gone through the bottom."

Sharpton said he would push a constitutional amendment requiring quality health care for all Americans, including the 40 million without any health insurance.

Asked by Tom Whitmore of Sioux City whether Bush and vice president Dick Cheney lied in the lead-up to the war, Sharpton replied, "Unequivocally, yes."

Sharpton was critical of the $5 billion a month it costs to remain in Iraq. Said Sharpton, "Bush said we must have this money to occupy Iraq. Well, what about the 50 states we already occupy that we don't have the money for?"

He encouraged Iowans to turn out for the Jan. 19, 2004, caucuses, which fall on the Martin Luther King Day federal holiday. "What better way to celebrate King Day than to expand this pot, to stand for what is right, on a global-political and domestic level, to show George Bush that we will not be divided, but that we are coming together to bring America back to America," he said.
