Rumsfeld confident of new countries joining coalition in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AFP) - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld told US troops he was confident that additional countries would contribute troops to the US-led coalition in Iraq.

"If we can get another UN Security Council resolution which we believe we can, it would assist in getting ... one or two handfuls of countries that could contribute troops. That would be a very good thing," he said.

He said the United States was currently in discussions with other countries, but did not want to name them.

But Gordon, speaking at the Transatlantic Center think-tank in Brussels, said there was now no prospect of NATO taking a bigger role before November's U.S. presidential election.

"The last thing the Europeans want to do is come to the June summit and allow George W. Bush to preside over the alliance as a great leader," he said. "It is unimaginable that the Europeans will go to Istanbul and give Bush whatever he wants."
