Kerry views Iraq abuse images, blames Bush
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N13695607.htm

WASHINGTON, May 13 (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry saw for himself on Thursday the images of violence and sexual humiliation at a U.S.-run prison in Iraq, and blamed "grievous" errors by the Bush administration and lax oversight up and down the chain of command for the scandal.

With that, his most stinging assessment yet of the Republican administration, Kerry made clear he would not back down in the face of charges by President George W. Bush's campaign that he was politicizing the war and prison abuses.

After wrapping up a day of campaigning in Arkansas against Bush's health care policies, the Massachusetts senator returned to Washington, where he viewed images made available to lawmakers showing Iraqi inmates being subjected to sadistic torture, sexual humiliation, and worse.

"This administration has made a grievous error in the laxity of command control," Kerry told the Fox News Channel in an interview. "And I am convinced this didn't happen just because six or seven people decided to make it happen in a prison. It happened as a matter of what was going on in terms of interrogation and the laxity of command up and down."

Choosing Fox News to deliver the attack made it all the more pointed. The station is a favorite of conservatives.

The two flew together from LR. Not speculating on anything else, but I bet they talked about how it is serving it to the wingnutz.

2. dang, he is smoothe....
If he went to another media outlet, it would have been ignored by the Great UnWashed of Fauxland......

They all had to either listen to him or turn their precious Fox news off for a while. Good.

3. Your Right
I also watched this broadcast tonight and found Kerry to be extremely calm and collected when delivering his answers to the questions he faced. It gave me all the more reason to like Kerry for the next year’s election. Further more I do believe that the Bush administration has brought these photos of our Soldiers abusing these prisoners upon our selves because of the interrogation methods that our military and CIA is given the right to use in this War. All this does by giving our interrogators the right to torture or use extreme ways of interrogation toward Iraqi and Al-queda members, is teaching those people that witness these acts violence. I believe and even Pres. Bush would most likely agree himself that the only way we will win the hearts and trust of the Iraqi people is if we do it peacefully and show the Iraqi people that we are truly there to help them. Id hate to say it but when the people that we are so called liberating see these photos I cant believe they see anything different that what they saw their government do before we got there.
This is a time period where the people fighting our military and those commanding it have to be extremely careful on what happens, unfortunately I believe that the outcome of Nick Berg's fate was determined by this incident as revenge showing us that anything we can do they can do "worser". I am greatly opposed to the War as most liberals are, but I am also a realist like John Kerry and know that there is no easy solution for this, you can't simply end this thing now it needs to be finished to better the lives of these people, because it would not be fair if we immediately put the operation to a halt at this time.
I am incredibly grateful that John Kerry himself has stood up to The Bush Administration and has successfully shown the democratic party that he is very passionate about this situation and will continue to speak his mind until he is the one calling the shots in the White House.

11. Hello, and Welcome!

Welcome to DU, 397! Nice to meet another numbered poster.

3 seems to be a fairly common first number, were you born in the Sixties?

Is 97 English? I'm 09. Irish. It's pronounced O'Nine, not O'Neen.

Anyway, welcome. Come on in, set a spell... Kick y'shoes off.

309

7. oooh. . .he said "laxity" (giggle)
He has no idea how people talk. When was the last time you heard "grievous" in a sentence? Why can't he just say Bush is a crappy commander and these pictures are bulls**t?

9. Yes, but will Kerry clean up the military's culture of abuse
Basic Training and military hazing is abuse glorified and should be eliminated or reformed. It is transforming our soldiers into orcs.

12. Yes, Kerry did a good job
Especially compared to Pres. Chucklenuts who strains to eek out a coherent sentence. And Kerry is right, it's Bush's and Rummy's "the gloves are off now, boys" attitude that set the stage for the abuse we've seen. I shudder to think of what is going on in the CIA's secret gulags.

You know, soon the US will be as hated and despised around the world as the old Soviet Union was. Bush has turned our country from the good guys into a new Evil Empire. I can't even being to express the level of hatred I have for these villains.

BTW, that Colmes has a face for radio, doesn't he?
