Correction: Dented Diebold Story
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGAEJ7VI8UD.html

NORTH CANTON, Ohio (AP) - In a story sent May 8 about the e-voting system of Diebold Inc., The Associated Press reported erroneously that an unidentified hacker last year obtained the company's software blueprints, known as source code, along with e-mails and other documents.

A voter rights advocate, Bev Harris, found the source code on an unprotected Internet site in early 2003. Later that year, an unidentified hacker broke into a Diebold server and stole software, e-mails and other internal documents.

1. That is a pretty important correction.
Had the previous story implied that Bev was the hacker? Does anyone have the previous story?

2. I didn't see this one but I've seen several stories in the past year
Edited on Fri May-14-04 02:14 PM by sybylla
that claimed a hacker got the software though never with any mention of Bev nor mistakenly calling her a hacker.

IIRC, the "hacker" claim was a smear on Bev from Diebold and the press just kept repeating it. There is no such thing as investigative journalism any more.

3. "...no such thing as investigative journalism."
Didn't you get the memo? Investigative journalism IS hacking, and you will report it as such.

4. Thanks for the clarification.
I recall reading that the SS was trying to intimidate Bev about this. Notice that "corrections" are always buried deep within the newspaper, despite the fact the damage has already been done. :grr:

5. Claiming Bev is a hacker
is like like claiming someone who walks into a public library and makes copies of books some idiot left on the desk is a "house breaker".
