Bush worries news coverage might cloud his judgment: report
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20040514/ts_alt_afp/us_vote_bush_news&cid=1506&ncid=2043

<snip>
WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) mostly shuns news coverage because he worries it might cloud his "clear outlook" with what he perceives as a left-leaning bias, he said in a book excerpt.

"I like to have a clear outlook," he told the author in one of two interviews. "It can be a frustrating experience to pay attention to somebody's false opinion or somebody's characterization, which simply isn't true."

<snip>
Bush, who is known for devouring the sports section of newspapers, said he scans the front pages of a few major dailies and, if he finds a particularly interesting story, "I'll skim it."

White House aides, including chief of staff Andy Card, cull the newspapers for information that they present to Bush, who also relies on First Lady Laura Bush's recommendations in deciding which news stories to read.

That's what the Chimp is really afraid he'll read. "False Prophets" like those warned about in the Bible = the Devil and he'll get in Georgie's brain if he reads the Left-Wing-Devil-Controlled media.

to be able to read opinion articles without losing his own sense of self: it apparently threatens him that such articles sway his opinion.

Gosh, nothing worse than having second thoughts or changing your mind ever so slightly!

It sort of looks like his wife tells him what to think, according to the story:

"Since I'm the first one to see him in the morning, I usually give him a quick overview and get a little reaction from him," Card told the author. "Frequently, I find that his reaction kind of reflects Laura Bush's take."

74. The Republicans always project their own faults onto others.
When the Republicans accuse somebody else of malfeasance, it usually means that they themselves are doing it.

Examples:

Myth: The press is controlled by the left. False. Liberals aren't very good at controlling anything. Our whole philosophy is based on respect for individual choice. In fact, the right-wing has taken very effective control of the main-stream media.

Myth: First Lady Hilary Clinton had too much secret control over the White House. False. Hilary Clinton's suggestions were made openly. In fact, the First Ladies with secret and inappropriate influence were Nancy "Astrologer" Reagan, Barbara "Ma Barker" Bush, and now Laura "Interprets the News for Me" Bush.

24. If his outlook is so clear, why would he allow it to be clouded?
I thought this was Mr. Resolute we were talking about. Why would he fear that reading a few articles in the paper could so dramatically change his world view?

Answer: He KNOWS he's wrong about everything. But as long as he doesn't actually read any evidence of it, he can continue to live in denial of the truth.

28. Josh Marshall's excellent take on this in today's TPM
Reed Irvine-in-Chief?

Excerpt:

What strikes me about this isn't the stuff about the First Lady or the skimming of articles. It's that, at least from his self-presentation, the president seems to see his news reading largely, if not entirely, as an exercise in detecting liberal media bias. That, and he seems to see shielding himself from opposing viewpoints as a key to maintaining what he calls a "clear outlook" and what Sammon refers to as being an "optimistic leader".

I guess we can all relate to this, can't we?

How 'frustrating' it is to have to listen to "somebody's false opinion or somebody's characterization, which simply isn't true" (i.e., information that contradicts our assumptions and viewpoints)?

It (i.e., critical thinking) really gets in the way of having a "clear outlook", right?

<snip>

He doesn't even need the yes-men who "extract" the "facts" from the news articles. He's his own built-in yes-man.

How could we have ignored so many warnings, so much expert advice, so many facts staring us in the face? The president just gave you the answer.

- I am continually astonished that he is President of the United States.
- He admits he is spoon-fed only information he wants. Lacking the intellectual curiosity to READ NEWSPAPERS.
- The simple fact that he occupies the Oval Office is an indictment of our society. Enlightened societies have men of great ability as their leaders. We have a truly ignorant and stupid man as our chief executive. Unbelievable.

1. Obviously, he doesn't trust his own judgement or ability to be objective

2. Probably has low reading comprehension

3. Rather than a "left-leaning bias" he'd likely find spin in his favour

This last point really gets me! Why do people always rant about the media's "liberal bias"? They are towing the ReThug party line, IMO, not leaning left.

:wtf:

67. He is lying. Again.
April 2003:
The president reads newspapers first thing in the morning, flipping through some of them while he's still in the White House residence instead of waiting for clippings assembled by aides. Through the day, he regularly watches war coverage on the nearest TV, which is in the private dining room next to the Oval Office. He knows when heavy bombardments of Baghdad are scheduled and sometimes tunes in to see them.

As he consumes media accounts of the war, Bush has noted criticism coming even from some people he believes should be his allies. He was stung last year when Brent Scowcroft, his father's national security adviser, wrote a newspaper column questioning the necessity and wisdom of going to war.

September 2003:
HUME: How do you get your news?

BUSH: I get briefed by Andy Card and Condi in the morning. They come in and tell me. In all due respect, you've got a beautiful face and everything.

I glance at the headlines just to kind of a flavor for what's moving. I rarely read the stories, and get briefed by people who are probably read the news themselves. But like Condoleezza, in her case, the national security adviser is getting her news directly from the participants on the world stage.

HUME: Has that been your practice since day one, or is that a practice that you've...

BUSH: Practice since day one.

HUME: Really?

May 5, 2003:
Bush said he first saw the pictures on television, noting that he was aware of the investigation that preceded the broadcast on CBS's "60 Minutes."

69. AAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sorry. I just had to have a primal moment there.

Jesus, where to begin:

1) He's admitting that his own mind is not strong enough to resist the 'bias' of whatever it is that he's reading at the moment. It's like he's got a big sign taped to his head that says "MANIPULATE ME!"

2) Yeah, I guess your outlook is pretty "clear" when your head is friggin' EMPTY.

3) The way his entire entourage treats him like an eggshell that could crumble at any moment if exposed even to a rough breath of air really scares me.

4) Laura is telling him what to read and those assholes complain that HILLARY had too much influence?

:argh:

75. You would think his God would tell him to keep his trap shut,
he's making both of them look like idiots.

Blind guesswork would have better results, at least SOME of the time you might be right.
