Shock of War Comes Home to America's 20-Something Generation

CHICAGO (AP) - For 20-somethings, this is their war now - the first they've experienced as adults, the one in which they are major players.
Graphic images from Iraq are being circulated on their medium, the Internet, riveting a generation sometimes criticized for being disengaged. And many of those images involve people their age, among them 26-year-old Nick Berg, whose horrific death was captured on video - as well as young American soldiers mugging for the camera alongside naked, hooded Iraqi prisoners.

"It's the first time we can't just point a finger at a leader and say 'You did this wrong' and instead have to say 'We're doing this wrong,'" says Sarah McAuley, a 24-year-old who lives in San Francisco. "The people shown abusing Iraqi prisoners are me, or at least not as distinguishable from me as some."

McAuley saw the first photos showing abuse of Iraqi prisoners on a TV at her gym. Soon after, she fired off an entry for her Web log, describing how she felt "sad, ashamed and disappointed."

more...If they are shocked now wait until they get their farking draft notices.

3. This war is sanitized.
They used to show shots of wounded men, gun fire and explosions during the Vietnam War on the nightly news almost every night.

Even the WWII newsreels were more graphic than the reports we've seen on the war in Iraq.

Funny how the media will play fake violence all day long, but doesn't dare show the real thing.

4. This is why...
Us old fucks, who lived through the Vietnam Era, in whatever capacity, must seize every opportunity to get right into their young faces and give them a little dose of reality about war and what it really means, for now and into our future.

God, I am such an obnox these days. Someone starts with the bullshit and I just decimate them. Thankfully, I have the 17 years of martial arts, if I need them. I hope I don't need them.

8. Tell them about the Draft
you'll find them a tad more receptive these days...

Left, left, left right, left, you are in the army now...

And as they get a tad scared.... they will start thinking... maybe.

They will even start thinking REGISTER TO VOTE AND GODAMED IT... VOTE

9. The Sad Thing about the Draft
At UC San Diego they did an improptu survey and found that the majority of the students wouldn't go to Iraq instead they would try to avoid the draft or go to Canada.

Now I don't find that bad at all but after thinking about it I think it is really sad. The reason being that there is no major university protests against the war. The students seem to be perfectly content with the war as long as somebody else is dying.

11. I hardly think that is a true statement
Lynne Cheney and Bill Bennett did make the circuit to the universities
pumping up junior and the need to invade Iraq. In fact Lynne and Bill were taking names of left wing professors, remember?

10. perhaps the line should be
if you don't register to vote, then be prepared to register for the draft.

and it wouldn't surprise me if our fearless leader or herr ashcroft comes up with a neat little stipulation that would encourage canada to turn away young draft dodgers. perhaps just ignore boundaries and send u.s. marshalls into canada to retrieve them.

if w. sets his eyes on our young, you can rest assured he's going to do everything he can to get them.
