Surprise visit puts Rumsfeld back on the offensive

WASHINGTON (AFP) - After a weeklong flailing by opponents calling for his resignation, US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld struck back this week.

His surprise visit to the Iraqi prison at the heart of an abuse scandal that had rocked Washington and the world put the embattled secretary back at center stage, for the moment on more favorable terms.

Instead of Rumsfeld on the witness stand pledging his "deepest apology," the public saw Rumsfeld striding the Abu Ghraib prison grounds in desert boots or basking in the patriotic embrace of US troops.

"I've stopped reading the newspapers," Rumsfeld told laughing, applauding troops in Baghdad in a televised "town hall" meeting at the end of his visit.

"It's a fact," he said. "I'm a survivor."

Whether Rumsfeld will survive the abuse scandal remains to be seen.

I know that if I was parked in the middle of Iraq, sand in every conceivable orifice, two months or six months past my date to be rotated home, pondering that every sunset might be my last, and what might be going on back home with the wife and kids, that my first, foremost and greatest worry would be whether Donald Fuckface Rumsfeld was in political difficulty for being such a world-class vaporbrain.

Yeah, that's the ticket.

I was mildly amused when the media declared how amazed they were when Rumsfeld made the 'brilliant' move of going to Iraq ....
