White Supremacists Leave Early After Close Confrontation

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Two dozen white supremacists held a rally Saturday near the site of the school that was the subject of the historic Brown v. Board of Education decision, but they cut the demonstration short after counterprotesters moved within about 25 feet of them.


A line of police officers in riot gear stood between the supremacist group and about 100 counterprotesters in a city park near the former Monroe Elementary School, subject of the U.S. Supreme Court's 1954 decision declaring segregated schools unconstitutional.

About two dozen of the counterprotesters had moved into the area designated for the supremacists, and for several minutes the two sides shouted insults and taunts at each other. snip

One of the protesters, Jerry Bellow of Austin, Texas, said after the rally, "You defeat fascism by showing them you're not afraid."

Yeah, great, now how do I argue against a freeper who wants to bash the heads of anti-bush protestors, or cops who might want to allow that violence?

Free speech -- and without the threat of the police turning a blind eye to mob vigilantism --must exist for everyone -- even Klansmen -- or it exists for no one.

The Secret Service that sets up "Free Speech Zones"?

The Attorney General (that's currently Mr. Ashcroft, you trust his judgement)?

The President?

I've heard these promises before, and they a;ways seem to end with a KZ or a Gulag.

i just commented we'll go toe to toe with them.

Free Speech means I must defend to the death the right for someone to say something that I would spend my lifetime screaming at the top of my lungs to discredit.

Free Speech is a two way street as you already know :)

9. One driving by our non-violent protest pointed a rifle at me/us,...
,...and I thought, "DAMN, these people are infatuated by BUSH,...why?" It wasn't until AFTER the guy had passed,...and AFTER our protest,...that I actually started to :scared: by the fact some wacko was pointing a rifle at us as he drove by screaming obscenities.
