US denies Rumsfeld approved Iraq interrogation methods
Edited on Sat May-15-04 10:35 PM by JoFerret

U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld didn't approve any operations that led to the interrogation methods used on Iraqi prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison, the Defense Department said.

The denial was made in response to an article on the New Yorker magazine Web site, which said Rumsfeld had approved expanding an interrogation program, which had been used in Afghanistan to hunt for al-Qaeda.

Rumsfeld faced calls for his resignation from Democrats in the Congress after the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison exposed in a series of pictures. Rumsfeld and U.S. military investigators have said the mistreatment was the work of a few undisciplined soldiers.

``No responsible official of the Department of Defense approved any program that could conceivably have been intended to result in such abuses as witnessed in the recent photos and videos,'' spokesman Lawrence DiRita said in a statement on the defense department's Web Site.

1. So the problem is...
...according to Rumsferatu, that they "didn't follow orders correctly". In their enthusiasm, or perhaps due to their anger of having two weekends a year turn to a year+ deployment, they stepped outside the bounds of his instructions for "expanded interrogations".

Yo Rumsfeld, you are so full of shit, and so completely busted. Look at the legalese wording of their denial...

expected the outcome. What a pants load, Rumsfailed.

There, they finally admitted it. These guys are totally irresponsible, and reprehensible. They answer to no one.

just that they didn't think it would be "witnessed". Geez, they can't even doublespeak well anymore!

8. O yeah
that believable ....Not

According to a classified document prepared for Rumsfeld by his Defense Science Board, the new organization--the "Proactive, Preemptive Operations Group (P2OG)"--will carry out secret missions designed to "stimulate reactions" among terrorist groups, provoking them into committing violent acts which would then expose them to "counterattack" by U.S. forces.

In other words--and let's say this plainly, clearly and soberly, so that no one can mistake the intention of Rumsfeld's plan--the United States government is planning to use "cover and deception" and secret military operations to provoke murderous terrorist attacks on innocent people. Let's say it again: Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, George W. Bush and the other members of the unelected regime in Washington plan to deliberately foment the murder of innocent people--your family, your friends, your lovers, you--in order to further their geopolitical ambitions.

Ummm... Rummy's working off of bin Laden's plan, then.

This is exactly what bin Laden's strategy is. Draw the US into ever-broader acts of violence within the Arab world, and then portray any such actions as anti-Muslim.

And it's obvious that the US, under Bush's leadership, is playing the part of bin Laden's bitch -- doing exactly as he desires.

28. I'm trying to remember where I had read that 'cause it stuck with me.
And, everytime something is published which seems at all suspicious,...it is due to that Rummy Rule of provoking reactions from others. Frankly, I also believe that the neocons use this provocation process upon the American people as well.

I have NEVER, in my life, seen such a BRAZEN, cock-sure, arrogant, aggressive liar like Donald Rumsfeld. Thank God there's only one of him.

The Yahoo article also mentions that this whole project was approved by Bush, and Consleeza Rice.

HAH.

I don't expect that all of a sudden they will change and start telling the truth and admitting all the shit. I who somehow be disappointed if I were to wake up one day to the sounds of mea culpa
from the direction of Washington. Never going to happen.

15. Half thruth.
I doubt Rumsfeld would have explicitly approved anal rape as interrogation method. BUT there are are other methods of systematic torture and degradation he has allowed. IMO, both the "rotten apple" and the "systemic torture" are true. Torture is part of the interrogation system, and nobody seemingly felt responsible to stop people who were encouraged by this break of humanitarian rules and just continued with it for their own pleasure.

and Hersh isn't naming names nor does he have documentation that I have seen so far. Am I missing something?

This is not directed at you specifically maddez just you had the link in your post

I would love to see a "smoking gun" memo or anything that points straight at Rummy or the WH

I guess since nobody told them in those exact words not to do that, then they were not responsible.

Sorta like needing the flight number and times before stopping the highjackers. Or never saying "imminent"
