Explosions in central Baghdad near U.S. HQ

BAGHDAD, May 16 (Reuters) - Two loud explosions rocked central Baghdad on Sunday and black smoke rose from the area around the U.S. headquarters in Iraq, known as the Green Zone, Reuters correspondents said.

Two U.S. helicopters circled the area shortly afterwards.

A U.S. military spokeswoman said she was not aware of any plan to conduct controlled detonations of unwanted munitions.

But all the "Green Zone" explosion stories now make me think of 5 o'clock Charlie from M*A*S*H.

3. It's ironic that they call it the "Green" Zone...

...since green means "go" and "go" is clearly the message of the mortars.

A rocket struck the Green Zone on Saturday, wounding one U.S. soldier and one civilian, the U.S. military said.
