US Gov't Disavows E-Mails About Berg's Detention

The State Department says an e-mail from a consular officer in Iraq that said beheaded American Nicholas Berg had been in US custody was based on erroneous information.

Spokeswoman Kelly Shannon says the Coalition Provisional Authority in Iraq had sent the incorrect information to the diplomat. The diplomat sent Berg's family an e-mail saying he had been in US custody. But officials now insist he had been held by Iraqi police.

<snip>

Berg's brother is calling on the government to come clean about its contacts with the slain American before he died. The family has blamed the government for keeping him in custody for too long while anti-American violence escalated in Iraq.

"They're trying to deflect attention to a couple weeks down the road when no one's paying attention," David Berg said. "I think President Bush needs to be a man about this and tell the truth. I think most, if not all, Americans can figure out who's telling the truth and who's lying."

1. VERY suspicious
this whole situation is VERY strange, there's a lot that must be going on behind the scenes, and I have a hunch that if it becomes public it will be yet more evidence of the incompetence and immorality of the Bush regime...

14. Methinks it will be more evidence of their Nazi-esque tendencies.
Let's just say that it wouldn't surprise me if the traitors in the White House had Berg killed, or at least looked the other way after he died during interrogation.

2. When have they ever admitted anything. It has always been a
daily crime with these knotheads, but now it's in the press everyday.

5. I believe the Berg family has copies of the emails
because they showed them to Newsday newspaper.

Newsday carried this story in the last few days.

NOW the admin. is saying the info was wrong.

They have a lie for every occasion.

7. You're doing it all wrong! You're supposed to only watch the video and
get all riled in an orgy of nationalistic righteous frenzy about "this is why we're over there in the first place" and, "but look what those animals do to us, and you want me to care about some frat hazing?", and ignore all the other sneaky suspicious shit like the questions we haven't answered about what we were doing with him when he was in our custody!

8. Why don't they want it known that Berg was in US custody?
On its face, it doesn't seem to be that big of a deal who had him in custody, given that he was released before he went missing.

So, if the US admits that they did have him, what do they fear will be downstream from that admission?

10. An interesting question indeed
Just what does the administration have to hide. It seems obvious to me the email is real and some consulate staffer replied to the Berg family without prior approval.

13. A big, desperate lie like this does not cover up a petty crime.
It's untidy and wholly unconvincing. Beth Payne sent the Bergs several emails, confirming and reconfirming Nick was held by the US. Nick himself said the same. The Iraqi police in Mosul say they never had him. The Bergs had been suing the Pentagon regarding Nick's custody. It wasn't until after the video that they're told, essentially, No, sorry; never saw him before in our lives.

Such a big lie, grounded in nothing but evident desperation. You can almost see it sweat.

12. Not only did the official get it wrong, but Berg must have, too.
He told his parents it was the US military who was holding him. They had enough information to launch a suit against Rumsfeld.

15. Agreed, there is fire behind this smoke
They want to distance Berg from the U.S. government, badly. The question is, why? I wonder if there was an autopsy done, and if time of death or some other salient fact isn't coming out right.

It could also be that a civil suit by Berg's parents would lead to all sorts of discovery that would blow the lid off of something.
