"For nearly 12 years, Staff Sgt. Jimmy Massey was a hard-core, some say gung-ho, Marine. For three years he trained fellow Marines in one of the most grueling indoctrination rituals in military life - Marine boot camp.

The Iraq war changed Massey. The brutality, the sheer carnage of the U.S. invasion, touched his conscience and transformed him forever. He was honorably discharged with full severance last Dec. 31 and is now back in his hometown, Waynsville, N.C.

Q: And if DU is affecting you or our troops, it's impacting Iraqi civilians.

A: Oh, yeah. They got a big wasteland problem.

Q: Do Marines have any precautions about dealing with DU?

A: Not that I know of. Well, if a tank gets hit, crews are detained for a little while to make sure there are no signs or symptoms. American tanks have depleted uranium on the sides, and the projectiles have DU in them. If an enemy vehicle gets hit, the area gets contaminated. Dead rounds are in the ground. The civilian populace is just now starting to learn about it. Hell, I didn't even know about DU until two years ago. You know how I found out about it? I read an article in Rolling Stone magazine. I just started inquiring about it, and I said "Holy s---!"

I'm glad the DU story is coming out. These men are already doomed to a bad unhealthy life. The innocent Iraqi women and children also and have been dealing since the First Gulf War. Very sad, we went to liberate the people?

I'd heard it said before, but this confirms it.

On the one hand, I am grateful this individual has broken from the hypnosis and discovered reality. On the other, I am terribly sad at so much loss and angry at the destruction at the hands of greedy, heartless, neocon imperialists.

Let's hope that he is just the tip of the iceberg of US soldiers turning around. I want these guys to stand together and say, "Enough!" "Fuck you!" I want some officers to stand up and walk away. I want someone in our military to redeem the whole organization by saying "Hell no!" If there are all of these "good guys" in our military they have got to be patriots, now. Now is time for them to show their colors and stop this muderous insanity. They are the only ones who can do it.

the more conversions like this we'll see. I just wish a lot more people had had the insight to oppose the war from the beginning. Apparently, millions of folk contacting Congress last year didn't matter. x(
