When this was first reported, I thought it was just another of the daily Green Zone blasts, intended to disrupt and intimidate, but which otherwise caused little harm.

I was certainly wrong this time.

2. Deaths reported as bomb hits US Baghdad base
A car bomb exploded close to one of the entrances to the main compound of the US-led coalition in Baghdad today and there were reports of deaths, a US officer at the scene said.

Cars were set on fire and a large column of thick black smoke rose into the sky.

US troops blocked off the area, next to one of the entrances to the ``Green Zone'', a sprawling compound that used to be one of Saddam Hussein's palace complexes and is now the main coalition headquarters.

Some witnesses said the blast, which echoed across central Baghdad, had been from a suicide car bomb.

20. Pathetic. I stopped at MSNBC only long enough to see a huge Anaconda
slither into a river.

Cable news stations on weekends are an even more outrageous mockery of their profession.

Baghdad blast kills Iraq leader

The head of Iraq's US-appointed Governing Council has been killed in a car bomb blast near the headquarters of the US-led coalition in Baghdad.

Ezzedine Salim was killed as he was waiting to enter the compound, Iraq's deputy foreign minister told Reuters; several other people also died.

A big column of smoke rose into the sky after the blast at about 0530 GMT.

There was also fresh fighting overnight in southern Iraq, as US and Italian forces battled with Shia militiamen.
