Sarin Nerve Agent Bomb Explodes in Iraq (Update with link)
Edited on Mon May-17-04 09:59 AM by NNN0LHI

BAGHDAD, Iraq - A roadside bomb containing sarin nerve agent exploded near a U.S. military convoy, the U.S. military said Monday. Two people were treated for "minor exposure," but no serious injuries were reported.

"The Iraqi Survey Group confirmed today that a 155-millimeter artillery round containing sarin nerve agent had been found," said Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, the chief military spokesman in Iraq (news - web sites). "The round had been rigged as an IED (improvised explosive device) which was discovered by a U.S. force convoy.

"A detonation occurred before the IED could be rendered inoperable. This produced a very small dispersal of agent," he said.

The Iraqi Survey Group is a U.S. organization whose task was to search for weapons of mass destruction after the ouster of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) in last year's invasion.

93. If Saddam's folks had this in the beginning, don't you think they would
have used it? This stinks as much as the Berg beheading. Who in the world, except for the dittoheads here in the US, will believe this shit?
And our military said there is no need for further decontamination or worry? Why wouldn't there be need for further decontamination or worry if we really believe that Sarin had fallen into the hands of the insurgents or so-called 'terrorists?' This makes absolutely no sense. The insurgents are winning the hearts and minds of the world why would they behead Berg and now turn around and use Sarin gas? They aren't that stupid. But we are!

46. Rummy picked the shell up from Pine Bluff before his visit to Iraq
Awful damn convenient that the person in the world most under the microscope right now that has more access to chemical weapons than anyone else in the world just popped his head in the door to have a pep rally last week and an old sarin shell shows up minutes after he left.

Gee... I'll bet nobody checks the party that travels with Rummy either.

Think about it -- how much Sarin would the typical artillery shell hold? How quickly would it dissipate in the open air? Didn't those Japanese cult guys release some on the subway there a few years ago with relatively minor results?

25. Aum Shinrikyo's subway attack killed 12 and hospitalized 5000.
Granted, you're right, that's enclosed space as opposed to open air.

Got the numbers here:
http://cfrterrorism.org/groups/aumshinrikyo.html
It also says here that sarin can be easily produced by a trained chemist with publically available chemicals, so this doesn't prove any WMD lies.

40. yeah, that's not so "relatively minor" as I was thinking, 12 deaths and

5000 hospitalized, but I think this one in Iraq is just a case of an IED made from an artillery shell, and they just happened to find one that a Sarin leftover. Someone else posted that this stuff has a shelf life of about 5 years, so who knows how much was detected?

91. Not all deaths Sarin
Tragically, 12 people died n the Tokyo subway, but only 2 died from the chemical. 10 died from the stampede.

That was the worst case condition imaginable for release of a WMD, but many pairs of a size 8 foot did more mass destruction than the chemical.

56. So in essence
So in essence the US is claiming it found Sarin, accidentally released it and now just have the shell it was stored in?

So the evidence has pretty much been disposed of but now they have 'proof' of WMDs. Just during the middle of this scandal, the US has used up all of it's Credibility with the international world now I think.

.."terrorist" is thrown around WAY too much, it's true.

In this case it fits though. A suicide bomber blowing himself up taking a political figure and some civlians out.

That is a terrorist.

As for the sarin, we'll just have to wait and see.

You would think with an explosion of the force we saw today, if there were any sarin it would have either burned up or dispersed too much to do anything. This explosion occurred outside, not in a closed environment.

19. Given the number of artillery shells employed as IEDs in the last year...
It wouldn't be surprising if a survivor from the old chemical arsenal found its way into the insurgency's hands. If this were the case, we'd expect that the chemical agent was severely weakened after the many years (probably over a decade) since the shell was filled.

111. Remember the oil fields were secured first
The factories were looted and they found that things marked by the U.N. had been taken. If this one is one of the 16 that were found in January of '03 by the U.N. inspectors and was looted, who's fault is that? You remember all of the chaos at the beginning of the war, the Iraq museum was looted etc.... Just a thought. Oh and by the way Powell said on Meet the Press yesterday that he mislead the U.N. and world with his February presentation. This administration does not even believe its own lies, but when you are at just over 40% approval ratings what have you got to lose with another lie and cover-up?

There is no such thing. The only weapon that comes close to being one is a Nuke. Technically it is a WMD, but ass it is the only one the term WMD has no relevance. Biological and Chemical weapons do not qualify as WMD's. The entire set of munitions are more properly called NBC weapons.

Yeah when I found out about the story I immediately turned to fox news to get the most accurate report ;). I think these was the woman's exact words: "A WMD has been found in Iraq, proof that Sadaam has had these weapons in his stockpile. This weapon was made before 1990 and most likely has more of them." She didn't say how the weapon exploded.

39. My wild theory
Edited on Mon May-17-04 10:02 AM by AngryAmish
It is my understanding that chemical bombs have very little explosive. Just enough to disburse the gas a little.

IED goes off, but it is just a "pop" and no one thinks much about it. Bombers and US thought they got a dud.

However, every device is studied and in the follow up an explosive expert says "uh-oh".

I think you need lots of gas to make a successful attack. Not one shell, more like a real bombardment. Need low winds, too.

Kay said that with the number of ammo dumps and huge amount of left over weapons all over that country, it is not surprising that some old shells were not destroyed earlier.

I also noticed his asking a question, not getting the answer he wanted, interupting it to try a different tack. He interupted David Kaye several times when Kaye was saying that it doesn't do anything for claims of WMD, or recent program to produce them. He didn't get add that it also doesn't support claims of intentions to create weapons of mass destruction program related activites.

What I wish someone would finally say is that we knew that Saddam once had chemical weapons and the means to disburse them because little Donnie Rumsfeld sold them to Iraq.

44. David Kay on MSNBC -- "This doesn't rise to the burden of a
continuing WMD program" as was used to start this war. He says this was likely left over from the Iraq-Iran war and it would've been nearly impossible, given the huge stockpiles, to have gotten rid of EVERYTHING.

Speaking a lot of good sense.

It should be inert after 5 years, that means either it was just a big threat or that something doesn't add up.

All I see is lots of talk happening on this subject, yet no real details on it, no significant evidence of real WMDs.

To be totally honest, this was even within my parameters of predicted ploys by the Administration as I set down over a year ago, this will be used as proof of WMDs and if this isn't enough they'll find someone huge about a month before the election. Timing with this country and the confusion over it makes this an event of questionable authenticity.

Maybe clear the area of mosquitos. If that. But not "Inert" which means chemically unreactive. If it is inert, you could let your kids play with it with no fears. I'd guess that functionally inert which would implies that it would no longer be effective at it's intend purpose would be a bit more accurate.

55. it was a homemade bomb from an old mortar shell.."virtually ineffective"
Edited on Mon May-17-04 10:27 AM by Danieljay
Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt said at a briefing in Baghdad that the bomb, which exploded "a couple of days ago" in the Iraqi capital, consisted of an old "binary-type" artillery shell that required the mixing of two chemical components in separate sections of the cell to produce the sarin.

"The cell is designed to work after being fired from an artillery piece," he said, adding that dispersing the substance from a device such as the homemade bomb "is virtually ineffective as a chemical weapon."

....and lets not forget this stuff is useless after 5 years and it is/was not a part of an active chemical weapons program. Its probably from an old shell we gave them back in the 80's. You can expect more of this doo-doo from the Bush administration as they become desparate to divert the American people from the truth about this war.

... that doesn't mean "WE FOUND WMD!" Could have been brought in since we occupied Iraq, could have been some old shell lying around since pre-1991 that someone just found. You'd be nuts to think there wouldn't be a few old shells laced with chem. weapons lying around, with all the stuff Saddam used to have.

One old shell does not equal 45-minute nuke bomb capability. We're still governed by LIARS!

Ok, I'm confused ...

First we have the "explosion" report

Then we have the "additional detail"

> Brig Gen Mark Kimmitt said the blast caused a small release of
> the substance
, and two people were treated for exposure
> to the agent.

Then we have a backdated non-explosive discovery

> The substance was found in an artillery shell inside a bag
> discovered by a US convoy a few days ago, he said.

"How does the US Marines Corp USUALLY find a roadside bomb? By having it blow their freakin' heads off is how." But we're supposed to believe they just happened to stumble across a roadside bomb (lie #1) filled with Saddaams WMD (lie #2).

This is going to go one of two way:

will be totally discounted as just another false alarm in a string of hundreds of false alarms about WMD put forth by bush and his propaganda team.

2) Conflicting stories will emerge on how/who/when this supposed roadside bomb was found until it becomes quite obvious it is just another PLANT by bush and his Generals to try to take the heat off themselves.

Weapons of Mass Destruction my ass...if this was truely the intent to disperse WMD at American troops it would have found it's way into a mortar and been launched into the middle of a US Marine of ARMY station to inflict the most damage it could possibly inflict.

But to try to justify the entire war against the Iraqi people because of a single shell left by the side of the road (by the CIA most likely) to be found by US Troops (who have never found any WMD before) is ludicrious.

Try again Bush It's going to take a lot more then this amatuer setup to fool anyone

Uh, even the precursor chemicals for a sarin warhead from the Iran-Iraq War of the 80s would be completely inert according to a simple search for Sarin Gas most information can be applied, below is a link

CNN Now claims - It was emitting Sarin Gas when it was found, man this story can't keep itself straight. Wolf Blitzer is now claiming it's the second found, Mustard Gas was found 10 days ago. This really is becoming questionable. The stories are being spun exactly in the direction that the Bush Administration wants, at least by Wolf Blitzer.

72. Groups could have brought this agent with them ... ?
Edited on Mon May-17-04 11:05 AM by ElectroPrincess
This news "cracks me up" in a bizarre way. The right wing radicals will use this as a true justification for us to have invaded. What they fail to recognize is that WHERE this nerve agent originated from does not matter to the average Iraqi citizen. All the non-aligned Iraqi's see now is that George Bush's invasion has brought *hellfire* INTO their beloved country. Humm, who do you think the average Iraqi will feel holds the most responsibility for the increasing murders and chaos?

BTW our silver haired GQ General Kermit (Kimmit :P) better get his head and his a** wired tight ASAP, or else the Pentagon Brass will soon take a giant sh*t on him.

Civilian Translation: If any more of those nerve agents show up and actually KILL people OR another IGC leader is murdered, General Mark Kimmet will be relieved of duty in a New York minute. Mark better make extraordinary efforts to reach out to the Iraqi Community with some communication skills that transcend military power,i.e., kicking peoples' doors-in and increased raids and killings. I think the term is "concerted and thoughtful negotiations." And yes, military leaders are very good at doing this, i.e., no one group knows how to figuratively kiss a superior's ass better than General Officers (lol).

Oh what am I thinking? <eg> = As soon as "What death squads?" Negroponte represents the USA, everything will be as right as rain. (a rain of Iraqi, et.al., body parts as a result of our surgical strike ARTY shells).

I personally don't give a damn about Iraq's oil (drive a Honda). Rummy and his civilian cronies have screwed this invasion and occupation beyond repair. Therefore, I hope and pray that our arrogant leaders choose to declare victory and slowly withdraw all our troops out of the Middle East as soon as the earliest semblance of law and order emerges after 30 Jun 04. But I doubt that Bush will be that rational because he listens to Cheney, Rummy and "HIS God", not the citizens of the USA. Damn, for the short term, we're hopelessly screwed.

Please help elect John Kerry in November because he believes in a secular government (separation of church and state); he's proven himself to be "a good listener"; and most IMPORTANT of all, Kerry's highly intelligent, i.e., our Vice President will not be running the country from an undisclosed location. For you Naderites, I quote Randi Rhodes, "Nader can't win and we can't afford four more years of George W. Bush as President. <curtsy and exit stage left libertarian>

Otherwise do you really believe the iraqi govt had a precise inventory of all of it's 155mm rounds leftover from the iran/iraq war, and so therefore destroyed them all?

A rebel found an artillery shell, for all we know it was on his dad's mantle as a souveneir. He rigs it as an IED, not realizing it carried a sarin payload.

I don't see how this is outside the realm of rational possibilities.

If that was twenty year old remnants of sarin gas in the ARTY's payload, then it's "useless goo" as many have mentioned. Remember the former UN inspector (and former USMC Major) that took hell from the Radical Right but was correct in almost every assessment?

Scott Ritter:
"Iraq manufactured three nerve agents: sarin, tabun, and VX. Some people who want war with Iraq describe 20,000 munitions filled with sarin and tabun nerve agents that could be used against Americans. The facts, however, don't support this. Sarin and tabun have a shelf-life of five years. Even if Iraq had somehow managed to hide this vast number of weapons from inspectors, what they are now storing is nothing more than useless, harmless goo.

Chemical weapons were produced in the Muthanna state establishment: a massive chemical weapons factory. It was bombed during the Gulf war, and then weapons inspectors came and completed the task of eliminating the facility. That means Iraq lost its sarin and tabun manufacturing base."

Interpretation: I concur odds are that all of this ado is probably "on the level" (not a planted payload). However, this incident does not give the Right Wing any increased justification for the invasion of Iraq, i.e., this so called nerve agent has been this one lone Artillery round's "payload goo" for the past 15 years, not a dreaded Iraqi WMD.

Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt told a news conference the substance had been found in an artillery shell inside a bag discovered by a U.S. convoy a few days ago. The round had exploded, causing a small release of the substance, he said.

"The Iraq Survey Group has confirmed today that a 155 (mm) artillery round containing sarin nerve agent had been found. The round had been rigged as an IED (improvised explosive device) that was discovered by a U.S. force convoy," he said.

74. David Kay says it's not significant to WMD hunt
Says it's an old leftover 155mm artillery shell from the Iran/Iraq war. Other points he brought up:

1) There are probably others of these out there that just weren't accounted for during the required destruction due to bad inventory methods.
2) Insurgents who rigged as an IED probably did not know what they had, and instead assumed it was a standard explosive artillery shell.
3) Difficult without certain technological abilities, to rig such a shell to allow the chemicals to mix so that the full potential of such a payload can be released correctly. That is why it was only a small amount released.

Of course, it won't stop the "I told you so's" but according to the administration's own WMD man, it's not significant.

If you remember, weeks after the invasion, there was a lot of "told-you-so" when the Army found a cache of buried mortar shells. They turned out to be leaky, corroded, and only had traces of mustard remaining. Most likely "hazardous waste" (decommissioned WMD) that was buried for disposal.

As numerous posters have already pointed out, the shell was simply left over from the Iran-Iraq war and forgotten. The sarin reached the end of its shelf life long ago. The insurgents who planted the bomb almost certainly didn't know what it was.

DJ Iraq Fighters Found With Mustard-Gas Shell 2 Wks Ago -Fox

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The U.S. group searching for banned weapons in Iraq two
weeks ago found insurgents with a shell that contained mustard gas, Fox News
reports Monday, citing unnamed Bush administration officials.
The report said the Iraqi Survey Group found the shell with insurgents, but
Fox provided no other details about how it was found, and didn't say whether or
not the shell was exploded.
Tests, however, found the mustard gas to be inert, Fox News reported, and
officials think the shell may have been one of 550 that deposed Iraqi president
Saddam Hussein was said to have possessed, but didn't account for in the leadup
to the Iraq war.

DJ UPDATE: Bomb With Sarin Nerve Agent Explodes In Iraq - US

BAGHDAD (AP)--A roadside bomb containing sarin nerve agent exploded near a
U.S. military convoy in Baghdad, the U.S. military said Monday.
It was the first confirmed finding of any of the banned weapons upon which the
U.S. based its case for the Iraq war.
"The Iraqi Survey Group confirmed today that a 155-millimeter artillery round
containing sarin nerve agent had been found," said Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt, the
chief military spokesman in Iraq. "The round had been rigged as an IED
(improvised explosive device) which was discovered by a U.S. force convoy.
"A detonation occurred before the IED could be rendered inoperable. This
produced a very small dispersal of agent," he said. The incident occurred "a
couple of days ago," he said.
"Two explosive ordnance team members were treated for minor exposure to nerve
agent," he said.

...a few days ago but we're only hearing about it now leads me to suspect that someone needed some time to get their stories straight.

118. Inert mustard gas??? If I remember my high school lit class correctly
mustard gas caused soldiers to actually cough up pieces of their lungs. If the material in question is inert, wouldn't it be safe to say that it is NOT mustard gas?

109. There's probably more unaccounted sarin in the USA than Iraq
Remember the ricin scare in Britain last year? Not being up-to-date on ricin, I did a web search. What did I find? That anti-government groups in this country had tried to use it against federal agents by sprinkling it on car door knobs. Antrax? Right here. Sarin? You betcha.

114. Organophosphate pesticides
are a weakened version of nerve gas. The sarin stored at the Umatilla facility in Oregon has detectors that go off when surrounding farmers spray their fields.

Under the sanctions against Iraq, pesticides were not allowed to be shipped there because they could be used as a weapon.

People exposed to sarin and they did not die? my bet is someone got a hold of some of the organophosphate pesticides that the military and Halliburton have taken into the country.

Someone should do a quiz on fox news watchers
compared to real news watchers, and show how mis-informed they are. Like those geography tests that show like 70% of americans don't know where iraq is.

124. The PIPA study Oct.2003 (Welcome to DU)
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/kaymcfadden/2001757992_kay06.html

A just-released report by the University of Maryland's Program on International Policy (PIPA) finds a majority of respondents have misperceptions about the war.*

The results show 48 percent incorrectly believed that evidence of links between al-Qaida and Iraq has been found; 22 percent that weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq; and 25 percent that world opinion favored the United States going to war with Iraq.

A walloping 60 percent overall held one or more of these misperceptions.

"The more closely you followed Fox, the more misperceptions you had," said Clay Ramsay, PIPA research director. "No other news outlet came anywhere near that."

He said that in a separate examination of viewers citing Fox as their primary source, 45 percent held all three misperceptions.

America's river of public discourse — if I may extend this figure of speech — is polluted by our mistakes. A good newspaper cleans up after itself……..

…..I'm inspired to squeeze one last bit of mileage out of our river metaphor: If Fox News were a factory situated, say, in Minneapolis, it would be trailing a plume of rotting fish all the way to New Orleans.
