Swede says was abused at Baghdad jail, seeks damages from US army
WASHINGTON (AFP) - A Swede of Iraqi origin who claims US troops tortured him at Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad wants compensation from the US army, according to documents his US-based attorney provided AFP.

The man, known publicly only by the last name Saleh, filed with the US army claims service seeking "compensation for torture and other mistreatment" following his arrest in Iraq in September 2003, as well as the return of his vehicle and 79,000 dollars in cash, the claim said.

Saleh is an Iraqi-born Swedish citizen currently in Dearborn, Michigan, where he is "recovering with family and friends" -- including his mother, a US citizen, according to the claim, filed by Dearborn, Michigan-based law firm Melamed, Dailey and Akeel.

The claim describes Saleh as staunch opponent of Saddam Hussein, under whose dictatorship he had been jailed and tortured in the infamous Abu Ghraib prison between 1980 to 1985.

Saleh received political asylum in Sweden in the 1990s. After the collapse of Saddam's regime, he returned to Iraq with his family savings of 79,000 dollars, which he planned invest in a house and a business.
