U.S. concerned that more unmarked munitions in Iraq could contain nerve agent

KATHERINE PFLEGER SHRADER, Associated Press Writer
Monday, May 17, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(05-17) 12:17 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --

U.S. officials said Monday they are concerned that other sarin-filled munitions may still exist in Iraq -- and may not be well marked -- after evidence indicated a roadside shell that exploded contained the nerve agent.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the results were from a field test, which can be imperfect, and more analysis needed to be done. "We have to be careful," he told an audience in Washington Monday afternoon.

Rumsfeld said it many take some time to determine precisely what the chemical was, what its presence means in terms of risks to U.S. forces and other implications.

Meanwhile, the former top U.S. weapons inspector in Iraq, David Kay, said it's possible the shell was an old one overlooked when Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein said he had destroyed such weapons in the mid-1990s. Kay, in a telephone interview with The Associated Press, said he doubted the shell or the nerve agent came from a hidden stockpile, although he didn't rule out that possibility.

3. Rumsfeld: There are Known Unknowns
The Unknown

As we know,

There are known knowns.

There are things we know we know.

We also know

There are known unknowns.

That is to say

We know there are some things

We do not know.

But there are also unknown unknowns,

The ones we don't know

We don't know.

5. Rummy, this afternoon: It's only a "field test"
Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the results were from a field test, which can be imperfect, and more analysis needed to be done.

This morning I posted here on DU that it was probably a preliminary test. Also, I recalled Frist announcing a ricin attack on the Capitol, based on a preliminary test, which are designed to err on the side false positives.

These regime guys know they can fool the Sheeple time and again with this crap.

7. LOL! "We only used that as an excuse to invade ...
we didn't expect to have to deal with a few old munitions left lying around."

8. Okay, this may or may not be true.
I don't trust a word that this government says, and I view all this suspiciously. But, isn't this convenient? Big talk about Rummy and Cambone, and suddenly, this happens? Hmmm...

9. They will show up; the evil ones (at the White House) have had
ample time to plant them. How convenient that the sarin just pops up during the big drop in Bush ratings. We need to remind everyone about that. Now they are starting to drop the word an attack will come so we need to immediately start saying Bush has not protected our nuclear facilities, etc. every chance we get And we must keep the joke alive that Osama will be thawed in October. They are so transparent in their failure to be transparent. This group is not intellectual...they're just plain mean.
