Moore rant wows Cannes - Toronto Star (Momentum builds for F-911)

It took five separate screenings to accommodate the press demand to see Michael Moore's heavily anticipated anti-Bush documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday, and when it came to turning up the political heat here, neither the movie nor its maker failed to disappoint.

The audience at a afternoon gala screening responded with a 20-minute standing ovation. Festival artistic director Thierry Fremaux told the New York Times it was the longest he had ever witnessed in Cannes.

A scorching indictment of the current U.S. administration's military engagement in Iraq that colours the entire enterprise as being rooted in the Bush family's business relations with Saudi oil money and members of Osama Bin Laden's family — and featuring some harrowing footage shot by freelance camera crews of prisoner abuse, bombed Iraqi civilians and dead-of-night military raids on Iraqi homes — Fahrenheit 9/11 is a considerably more sober, impassioned and focused film than Moore's previous record-breaking box office documentary success Bowling For Columbine. It also features, for better or worse, considerably less Michael Moore on screen.

16. I wonder if this movie will get people to read the book
Edited on Tue May-18-04 12:33 PM by Sequoia
by Ray Bradbury which the title is based on. That was a good movie too with the little old lady standing by her books on fire and that guy stole one and read it. Can't remember the book he took from the bonfire though. How does Ray Bradbury feel about it? I can hardly wait to see Mike's movie.

3. Thanks for this!
This is the most in depth review I have read. Loved this part: "While inescapably a partisan and flatly polemical work, Fahrenheit 9/11 makes its case meticulously and convincingly,...". That sentence is pretty powerful, imo.

4. How long until
Reviewers find the usual Moore distortions, half-truths and lies?

6. God bless Michael Moore!
I hope he can stay safe. He is risking the lives of himself and his family to get the truth out. Everyone is going to HAVE to go see this movie and as many times as possible! This movie will HAVE to break all box office records - then maybe the media-money machines will realize that ALL of their proffit resources are not in the fascist/neoconnazi side of the house.

7. "neither the movie nor its maker failed to disappoint." - Huh?
So they succeeded in disappointing? I don't get it.

12. It seems
as if he meant to either write that neither the film nor Moore "disappointed" or that neither the film nor Moore "failed to deliver."

14. When I read the full article...
I couldn't tell if he liked the movie or didn't. He was talking about how it was made for making money, etc. Strange, I thought.

8. This movie will be seen in the U.S. before the election even if it has to
be done with bootleg copies downloaded from the internet. Truth will out. What an opportunity to build support to oust Bush. A nationwide movement of house parties viewing bootleg copies of F-911 between now and November!

9. We'd probably be able to get it shown in Canada.
From there it's real easy to get it into the States.
