IRS May Help DOD Find Reservists
http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,FL_irs_051804,00.html

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Defense Department, strapped for troops for missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, has proposed to Congress that it tap the Internal Revenue Service to locate out-of-touch reservists.

The unusual measure, which the Pentagon said has been examined by lawyers, would allow the IRS to pass on addresses for tens of thousands of former military members who still face recall into the active duty.

The proposal has largely escaped attention amid all the other crises of government, and it is likely to face opposition from privacy rights activists who see information held by the IRS as inviolate.

8. Isn't this against the law? Not that the illegality of it would stop the
Bushbots. I thought IRS info couldn't be forwarded to other government agencies - except obviously tax fraud to the Justice Dept. For example, if one embezzles money and pays the proper taxes on it the IRS can't pass the fact of the embezzlement on to the Justice Dept (or so I have heard).

10. It's not about Reservists not showing up when called
Once you complete your active status, you move to the inactive list, which means you no longer attend drill, engage in training, do the two week duty thing, get paid or earn points toward retirement. In effect, you've quit the Reserves and they've just kept your name in the Roledex.

I don't know if there's a requirement to send in change of address cards. I doubt anyone does -- not to avoid duty, just because they aren't told they have to do it. I wasn't told to keep them updated when I left the Reserves.

What a lot of people don't know is that after * has gone thru the active and inactive Reserve list, he can go after the retirees.

12. Bush is really getting desperate.
I know he wants a draft, but he can't let it happen before November 2. At the same time, Iraq and Afghanistan are getting worse every day and somehow the troops there must be rotated. So the 3,600 troops from South Korea and tapping the inactive reserve and this whole IRS/Gestapo search is really just one big middle finger plugging the hole in the dam hoping it won't burst for another 6 months. Lots of luck, asshole.
