God back in EU debate
God back in EU debate
Tue 18 May, 2004 15:51

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - God is back in the debate on the draft EU constitution as several states renewed demands to make a reference to Europe's Christian roots.

Predominantly Roman Catholic Ireland and Poland as well as Italy and Spain have long sided with the Vatican in demanding a reference to God, or at least Christian values, in the charter, against strong opposition from secular France.

The issue was raised again by Italy and Poland at a meeting of European Union foreign ministers on the constitution, which the 25-member bloc hopes to approve in June.

"We are aware of the difficulties but we believe that a small inclusion in the text would not alter the preamble too much," Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told reporters on Tuesday.

1. What is ironic
is that there is no mention of God in the U.S. Constitution and yet here we are on the verge of a Southern Baptist-led theocracy.

I say if mentioning God could have prevented that, then maybe France should relent here and let the God squad have its way, if only in a pro forma sense.

2. Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.
Leave the church out of government, and keep the government out of the church.

Didn't the 100 Years War teach Europeans anything? Did the Holocaust not happen? How about the Crusades?

4. You left off Columbus
There was a bit of religion behind his invasion and slaughter in America.

3. I don't see how putting god in a document prevents
his "followers" from taking over. Here, the Baptists have waged a war against Washington, Jefferson and Madison and are finally defeating them, but that has nothing to do with them leaving gods and religion out of the Constitution.

5. I suspect Spain has changed its view.
Goodbye Aznar. There's no need for the word "God" in a modern constitution.

7. If they put it in, does this mean that ...
they've given up on Turkey?
