Tapes reveal Enron misdeeds, PUD says

Newly released transcripts of phone conversations among Enron traders prove the company fraudulently manipulated market prices during the 2000 West Coast energy crisis, local utility officials say.
The Snohomish County Public Utility District (PUD) yesterday unveiled more than 2,000 hours of taped conversations that it says provide evidence that Enron and other companies overcharged West Coast utilities for power during peak times and continued to control market prices by withholding available energy at other times.
West Coast utilities say they'll use the evidence to file antitrust lawsuits against Enron and other participants and to request rebates for overcharges from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
To date, utilities such as the PUD, Seattle City Light and Tacoma Power have had little luck convincing FERC that duplicitous behavior by companies like Enron has impacted them.
If successful now, West Coast utilities could be due close to $1.8 billion.
