Official: al-Qaida Seeks Chemical Strike
Edited on Tue May-18-04 04:00 PM by maddezmom
WASHINGTON - The top intelligence official at the Homeland Security Department, worried about an increased risk of attack in coming months, says al-Qaida wants to strike on U.S. soil with something other than a conventional explosive — perhaps with a chemical or biological weapon.

Retired Lt. Gen. Patrick Hughes said in an Associated Press interview that America has gotten better at predicting and safeguarding itself against attacks since Sept. 11, 2001. But Hughes said he fears that new terrorists "are being made every single day on the streets of the Middle East."

As Homeland Secretary Tom Ridge prepares to testify Wednesday before the Sept. 11 commission in New York, Hughes and his deputies at the agency's information analysis division say the nation's security has improved since the terrorist attacks claimed nearly 3,000 lives.

"We had a dark age on 9/11," Hughes said in the interview Monday evening. "Now, we are trying to make ourselves more secure in a way that is palatable and constitutionally right."

1. Oh isn't this just too convenient
I wear my :tinfoilhat: with pride.

We needed something to distract the Murican public from the prison scandals, so we have the "discovery" of the sarin projectile in Iraq coupled with this story.

I don't believe either one.

6. My little goat
That's the only book Bush has read in the past four years. 'The Boy who Cried Wolf' is way too long.

3. Safer? Yeah, right.
We're not particularly safer now than we were on 9/11/01.

We have a ton of new laws that take away our Constitutional rights, and we have a major new, expensive Federal Bureaucracy, but we're no safer.

We have ultra-tight passenger screening for air travel, but access to cargo areas is about as air-tight as a screen door. We have a hundred reasons to "profile" men that appear to be Arabs, profiles which are defeated with a change of clothes, a shave, and a phony name.

We have databases to keep track on who writes what on the Internet, but we can't even track who was really involved in the 9/11 hijackings.

Another attack is just about certain, given our Wise and Courageous Leader's ability to spread love and peace among his enemies. Bombs? Nuclear weapons? Exotic gasses and organisms that can inflict horrible death? Name your poison.

Another attack ... more "necessary" compromises to freedom ... more pronouncements that disagreement equals treason ... more secrecy, more cover-ups, more wasted money. And when do the disappearing start? When do we start finding the bodies of torture victims, headless and strung up on telephone poles, inside the USA?

They like to tell us "freedom isn't free." It sure isn't. It's being sold cheap to the cynical by the cunning.

Food for thought? No; more pottage for dinner.
