U.S. Soldier Killed in Western Baghdad, 56 Now Killed in Action
U.S. Soldier Killed in Western Baghdad, 56 Now Killed in Action Since May 1
The Associated Press
Published: Aug 8, 2003

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A U.S. soldier was shot and killed in western Baghdad, the military reported Friday, the third American soldier reported slain in the capital in the past two days.
The military said the soldier was attacked Thursday night in the upscale al-Mansour neighborhood.

Since U.S. President George W. Bush announced an end to major combat in Iraq on May 1, 56 soldiers have died in combat. The total combat casualties in the war has climbed to 170, 23 more than in the 1991 Gulf War. (snip/...)

1. These numbers don't add up
They're using enron math in counting the dead. Using their math we only get 109. 53+56=109. I had 109 dead weeks ago, I believe it's somewhere closer to 130.

There was a flurry of dead reported after they roached out uday and qusay?, then all fell silent, now, the attacks are being reported again. Putting on the tin foil, there's probablly a freezer full of american dead somewhere.

5. Officially, 262 US families have been notified; 116 since May 1.
Here's the list. You'll notice a soldier just added who was evacuated to Germany.

9. "Killed in action" is a subset of "killed".
Edited on Fri Aug-08-03 09:35 AM by TahitiNut
It's really necessary to read carefully. A "casualty" is anyone killed or injured enough to require medical attention. The criteria for "killed in combat" are apparently quite ephemeral, perhaps only used when troops are actually firing at Iraqi.

It gets truly bizarre when the only deaths counted are US (not 'coalition' or other) military (not civilian, even US civilian) and "in action" (as opposed to afterwards due to wounds). This hypocritical accounting for human lives betrays a very anti-egalitarian attitude.

18. which is itself a subset of "somehow died"
I'd like to hear some details of the "non-combat deaths", since the media has already made mention of some of them being overturning vehicles that were scampering through "hot" areas. Was there gunfire at the time?

It really is ridiculous, and this will come back to haunt them. When you mount an operation of this scale, some accidents will happen, but ALL of the deaths would have been avoided had the operation just never happened.

2. Commander-in-Chief* ponders: Golf or fishing today?
Only 3 1/2 weeks left in the Executive Vacation. Got to make up his mind today.

Meanwhile, the rest of America laments the mounting losses of its sons and daughters to protect the profits of oil companies and arms manufacturers.

* Rejected by the majority of patriotic and discerning US voters in the 2000 election; appointed by the so-called supreme court.

6. Pam Hess from UPI just said
on CSPAN that there were three soldiers killed at a checkpoint. Has anyone ever heard about this incident? Pam Hess is actually in Baghdad so she would know, but I'm not sure I've heard this reported before.

7. Three soldiers killed in accidents in Baghdad
The following is from a brief AP news blurb on ABC Ch 22 Savannah website for Aug. 8, 2003:

"Two soldiers with the Army's Fifth Corps were killed when a grenade exploded accidentally at a checkpoint south of Baghdad."

"a third soldier from Fifth Corps was killed and another wounded in an accidental shooting"

13. What are the total casualties since we invaded?
I have yet to see a number that tells us how many have been killed AND wounded. My guess is it would be clsoe to 1000, if not over that. Anyone have an idea?

17. How many dead in Iraq?
Hell, as I have posted before, how many dead in Afghanistan? We have soldiers dying all over the Mid East in this war on terror and we can't get simple information on:

why NORAD couldn't scramble planes on S-11
where the hell Osama is
where the hell Sadam is
why Paul Wellstone's plane crashed
how many dead in Afghanistan
how many dead in Iraq

and only three or 4 hundred other questions that no one in govt or major media will tackle - it all, as expected, goes down the memory hole.

Meanwhile, we got the California spectacle to keep our media distracted (like they need ANY help) and Kobe to do serious reporting on, And, a pResident clearing brush for a month to look manly rather than clearing his desk.

screw it, I think I will go fishing.
