Ex-gay leader experiences ‘moral fall’
Johnston allegedly had sex with men without disclosing he is HIV-positive

By LAURA DOUGLAS-BROWN

Five years after starring in a national advertising campaign claiming gays can change their sexual orientation, Michael Johnston experienced a “moral fall” and left behind his ministries, two conservative Christian groups that worked with Johnston confirmed this week....

...In his speeches as an ex-gay, Johnston acknowledged having sex with men without disclosing his HIV status.

“I continued to live as a homosexual for two years after I knew I was HIV-positive,” Johnston said in a 1998 speech to a California church, reported in POZ magazine. “And I am ashamed to say that in those two years not once did I ever tell any of my partners that I was carrying this deadly disease.”

Johnston allegedly continued that behavior during his recent “moral fall,” according to a Virginia man who said he had a sexual relationship with Johnston that included Johnston using drugs and having multiple male sex partners.

“What we did was unsafe,” said the man, who spoke only on condition of anonymity over fears that he would lose his job because of his sexual orientation or HIV status....

2. So let me see if I understand this?
Not only did this guy allow himself to be driven into the closet by societal pressure, but then he engaged in unsafe behavior while knowing he was positive?

Seems to me this person has real issues with denial.

3. Hope he is sued for millions, and put behind bars
and according to Virginia Law, he can be punished for knowingly exposing someone to HIV.

And may this news get wide publicity to expose the sham that is this ex-gay movement.

4. Way back when...
...I ran into a guy I was acquainted with in college at a bar in SF. He went on about how he was going to be married soon, was tired of the gay scene, couldn't find anyone who was going to make a committment, blah, blah, blah. I asked him why he was in a gay bar, and he said he was "getting it out of his system" before marriage, so he wouldn't have any more urges. Then he had sex in the back room.

Anyway, this post reminded me of that. Face it, gay is genetic, it can't be changed like your hair color. Oh, great analogy--being gay is like your hair color--you try to change it, but it always comes back the way it was. Well, maybe it wasn't so great an analogy, but you get my point.

7. Another analogy
Trying to change from being gay to straight is like giving someone a laxative and then telling them they are not allowed to shit.

8. JAMES DOBSON should be sued for millions- and then some...
Dobson whose Focus on the Family is a multimillion dollar enterprise, is actually a psychologist.

He's actually a quack, he espouses these things...

9. "Moral Fall" or just "Gettin' Honest"?
I hope he gets consequences for not being honest about his HIV, but sounds to me like he tried to walk the "Straight Walk" until it became too much to bear.

A real good way to shut these "Reformers" up is to ask them how do you go about making a Straight guy Gay? They have no answer. seems to me like if you can make a Gay go Straight, the inverse should be true.

10. Link between careless sex and denial about homosexuality
Edited on Fri Aug-08-03 10:07 AM by varun
studies have shown that those in denial (or feeling self hatred) of their homosexuality engage in risky sexual behavior.

No wonder, Johnston (a clear example of a self loathing homosexual) endangered his own (and others') lives.

And organizations like CWA ("Concerned" Women for America, Focus on Family, Ex-Gay movements) are encouraging gay people to practice risky sex (indirectly) by telling them to suppress and deny their sexuality.

Here's a great (but long) article about the closeted gay community among African Americans:

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/03/magazine/03DOWNLOW.html

...Wallace ticks off the grim statistics: blacks make up only 12 percent of the population in America, but they account for half of all new reported H.I.V. infections. While intravenous drug use is a large part of the problem, experts say that the leading cause of H.I.V. in black men is homosexual sex (some of which takes place in prison, where blacks disproportionately outnumber whites). According to the Centers for Disease Control, one-third of young urban black men who have sex with men in this country are H.I.V.-positive, and 90 percent of those are unaware of their infection...

..For African-Americans, facing and addressing the black AIDS crisis would require talking honestly and compassionately about homosexuality -- and that has proved remarkably difficult, whether it be in black churches, in black organizations or on inner-city playgrounds. The mainstream gay world, for its part, has spent 20 years largely fighting the epidemic among white, openly gay men, showing little sustained interest in reaching minorities who have sex with men and who refuse to call themselves gay...
