GI: Boy mistreated to get dad to talk
military intelligence analyst who recently completed duty at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq (news - web sites) said Wednesday that the 16-year-old son of a detainee there was abused by U.S. soldiers to break his father's resistance to interrogators.

The analyst said the teenager was stripped naked, thrown in the back of an open truck, driven around in the cold night air, splattered with mud and then presented to his father at Abu Ghraib, the prison at the center of the scandal over abuse of Iraqi detainees.

Upon seeing his frail and frightened son, the prisoner broke down and cried and told interrogators he would tell them whatever they wanted, the analyst said.

The new account of mistreatment came as Army Spec. Jeremy Sivits was sentenced in Iraq to a year in prison Wednesday and a bad-conduct discharge after pleading guilty in the first court-martial stemming from the abuses at Abu Ghraib.

27. Nation, Liberate Thyself.
"The US needs to be invaded and leberated."

Hasn't this fiasco shown conclusively enough that foreign invasions don't work?

cripes, man. It is our country (or at least mine, can't speak for you), we don't need anyone to take it back for us. Have we gotten so fucking lazy and complacent that the solution is to wait for someone else to come and fix it?

Pardon the vitriole, and don't take it personally, but something about your statement really raises my hackles. Its just this sort of laissez-faire thinking that got us into the cluster-fucked position we are in now.

51. Your sadly mistaken, my friend.
The amerikkkan sheeple are just like the "good Germans" during Hitler's era - THEY still support bunkerboy despite all the evidence to the contrary.

I am afraid there WILL come a time in the not to distant future, when the rest of the world will have the return the favor and rescue us from our own idiots in charge.

It is YOUR thinking that keeps us in this mess.

57. I understand your position re: Sheeple.
And your references to the Germans of the Third Reich are quite obvious.

But I'm having trouble understanding the rest of your sentiment.

How exactly does my line of thinking (i.e. collective responsibility and initiative towards an end of influencing and changing the government of the nation we are citizens of) work towards perpetuating this situation?

Do you seriously suggest that our only recourse is foreign intervention? I concede that we will need the help and support of the rest of the world, but foreign invasion for our 'betterment' would simply be exchanging one form of control for another, no?

Please clarify for me if I've misunderstood your position.

78. In spite of the best efforts of most of us, we are constantly marginalized
Out votes are blocked or not counted, and the insane still control our country.

At some point, no matter WHAT our individual and collective efforts, we are not able to rid our country of such vermin.

The outside world are soon becomming our only hope.

We surpassed that point in 2000 - this election might be our last chance.

I think I am being perfectly clear.

82. School of the Americas
Hey, my dad taught at that school for three years back in the late 60s. We all lived in Fort Gulick, I was just starting kindergarten then. We used to have all of these Latin American officers over to the house a lot. Some probably became leaders, others have probably disappeared. Anyway, I was just a kid and totally clueless about it back then.

11. I have been saying for some time now...
THIS is the part of the story not getting proper coverage ( none of it is, but this aspect is almost being ignored)...

If there is any part of the torture story that NO ONE...freepers, neocons, the general public, etc, ... can justify or defend, this is it. we are torturing children in front of their parents!

Several months after the start of gw2, i read a couple of short paragraphs about us "detaining" wives, children, parents of prisoners to try to get them to talk, and also relatives of those "wanted" to try to get them to surrender. NO OUTCRY...not in LTTE or even here at DU (to any extent). It was ignored.

Now, finally, the truth is out...we aren't just detaining them, we are torturing them.

We have to get out and the UN/NATO has to take over. We have lost ALL credibility in Iraq and around the world.

The act of a "few" soldiers (under direction of the Pentagon/CIA) is endangering the lives of all soldiers over there, as well as our lives over here. I guess Rumsfeld thought that this will never see the light of day.

A Thank YOU to the Patriots who made sure that America knows what its Government is doing. Shame on those Traitors like Rumsfeld, Bush, and Cheney (just to name a few...there are so many of them) who are betraying America and our Democratic values.

On Edit: It is not only endangering our lives...it has made the lives of thousands of Iraqis a living hell.

The UN/NATO won't touch Iraq with a 10 foot pole. And rightfully so. We have a tyrant dictator for a leader, who thinks (with little thought) that he is the God Almighty. He can conquer all. But he too, like those before him "shall have a heavy fall"!

26. And what makes any of you think Bush won't do this to Americans?
He's been planning this for a long time.

If you're not a Republican, you are a potential threat.

Why do you think he's gone before the SCOTUS to broaden his EX powers..

He wants to be able to declare you an enemy combatant on his say so alone. Also he will have the power to have you picked up from your domicile, or your place of work, and shipped off to NC for processing...no attorneys, no right to councel..yer just gone until you are assigned to a camp somewhere in the country.

As far as I'm concerned, Iraq is just the practice run...

He has hired all the Independent mercenaries. They're ready to go to work. All Bush needs is the go ahead from Scalia. A decision is supposedly forthcoming in July...After all this... Bush shouldn't even be in office in July, nevermind another coup!

way of life.

Everything I've written is documented and true.
If you don't think soon you will be jailed for dissent
than I advise you to do a little reading on your own.
You can begin with the Executive Orders then mosey on
down to petitions before the Supreme Court involving
Bush and his request to broaden his authority.

Sgt. Provance and Josh White are
names that will go down in history.
If any legal action is taken against Provance,
we must defend him en masse.
He is a true patriot and has risked everything
to let us know what has been done in our names
and with our tax dollars with the complicity of our
Congress.
In return, we must DO something about it.
It MUST STOP NOW.
Any one who is a parent can imaging the

pain he must have felt in his helplessness to help his

This is UNFORGIVABLE.

77. "Kids! What's the Matter With These Kids Today" Paul Lynde.
What jerks, huh? Blaming these stressed out soldiers, making them take the fall for their policy of torture and humiliation.

"Soften them up".

46. Mistreated? Uh, try again.
I'd say the boy was terrorized and the father tortured.

Donald Rumsfeld, do the RIGHT thing for a change and resign NOW!

56. IT'S IN TAGUBA'S REPORT
Edited on Thu May-20-04 03:47 PM by saigon68
It was a "CIVILIAN" WHO ANALLY RAPED A 16 Year old Boy. Whose screams penetrated the air and the whole thing was filmed by US Soldiers, as the boy shrieked because his rectum was being savaged.

58. Where are the people
Who cry "What about the children" everytime these graphic images are broadcast in the U.S.? Apparently they're not too interested in what happened to that child.

I am absolutely disgusted to be an American right now.

55. Yeah, and I'm sure they got GREAT intelligence out of that dad
A father would confess to anything under those circumstances, truthful or not. That's really useful to us.

64. everyone knows TORTURE DOES NOT WORK
The person being tortured will tell you whatever he thinks you want to hear, just like this father did to stop his son from being tortured. NOT the truth, NOT the facts, whatever they think you want to hear. They will just start naming names of anyone they know.

Civilized people do not use torture. This is a war crime and should be prosecuted as such.

81. the German concentration camp commanders
Edited on Fri May-21-04 03:56 PM by bobbieinok
They spent evenings writing home to their families, reading Goethe, and listening to Beethoven.

One of the 'best' German poems about the Holocaust - Todesfuge by Paul Celan.

One of the repeated phrases 'Der Tod ist ein Meister aus Deutschland' - 'death is a master from Germany' (there's a connotation that master means concert master, orchestra director)

83. Another poem that hits home right now is...
Edited on Fri May-21-04 04:04 PM by Spazito
this one:

Pastor Martin Niemöller,
Nazi victim:

They came for the communists, and I did not speak up because I wasn't a communist;

They came for the socialists, and I did not speak up because I was not a socialist;

They came for the union leaders, and I did not speak up because I wasn't a union leader;

They came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak up for me ....

This is what the torture of the Iraqi detainees, the contravention of the Geneva Conventions and the Patriot Act mean, imo.

67. And so what frat party is this one, GOP?
which frat tortures children in front of their parents? please, i'm listening, hmm? any names?

thought so.

this torture thing is going to be the symbol to remove as many republicans from office as possible. protestors should show up to republican speaking events and primaries from now on with hoods on their heads, records of women wailing, pictures of fathers cradling their dead children, and big crucifixes of jesus and his quote "Why have you forsaken me?!" if that doesn't put a crimp in their style and forces them to develop a spine nothing will.
