Hastert Lectures McCain on War, Sacrifice
WASHINGTON - Growing tensions between House and Senate Republicans over the war in Iraq (news - web sites), abuse of Iraqi prisoners, tax cuts and budget deficits erupted Wednesday with House Speaker Dennis Hastert lecturing former POW and Arizona Sen. John McCain about sacrifice and war.

cut

"Throughout our history, wartime has been a time of sacrifice. ... What have we sacrificed?" McCain said. "As mind-boggling as expanding Medicare has been, nothing tops my confusion for cutting taxes during wartime. I don't remember ever in the history of warfare when we cut taxes."

cut

Asked Wednesday about McCain's remarks, Hastert, who was rejected for military service because of a bad shoulder, first joked: "Who? Where's he from? A Republican?"

Then, more seriously, he said: "If you want to see sacrifice, John McCain ought to visit our young men and women at Walter Reed and Bethesda (two Washington area military hospitals). There's the sacrifice in this country. We're trying to make sure that they have the ability to fight this war, that they have the wherewithal to be able to do it. And at the same time, we have to react to keep this country strong not only militarily but economically. We want to be able to have the flexibility to do it. That's my reply to John McCain."

1. US? you want ME to sacrifice?
no no no, sacrifice is for little people. the rest of us should just go about our daily business, only thinking about the war when Chimpy needs a boost in the polls.

hastert should be strung up by the GOP for this one. think he will?

6. Drew Carey Look Alike MF
Edited on Thu May-20-04 12:38 PM by atreides1
This cowardly Drew Carey look alike who hid under a slimy rock during Vietnam has the nerve to talk to McCain about sacrifice. Wasn't it his
President that wanted to cut veterans benefits, and cut combat/hazard duty pay for troops.

This f**k needs to go back to sucking off Delay, and getting it up the a** by Frist, the cat doctor. He needs to take his chicken hawk
a** and explain to those same troops why he wanted to cut their VA benefits.

On another thread someone was saying that all Republicans were not our enemies, well as long as they vote for pieces of offal like this they are.

7. I believe Mr. Hastert made Mr. McCain's point for him
The ones who are doing all of the sacrificing are the thousands sitting in hospitals and the hundreds laying in graves. Why are they the only ones making sacrifices? Why do millionaires get off without any sacrifice whatsoever? Hastert really cannot be that stupid!

I'm no big McCain fan, but how fricking dare Hastert say that to a POW who has the right position on this!! The tax cuts for the rich folks should be going to actually support the soldiers for flak jackets and re-armouring Hummers for example.

15. "they have to have the ability to fight this war"
so let's let the middle and lower class pay for it while the upper class gets the tax cut.

This pisses me off on how they dog McCain out. One of my teachers who is as liberal as fuck knows him and says beyond the politics he is a real decent guy. It's funny how the Republicans have a memember of their party who didn't run from military service unlike the rest of them and instead of praising him they dog him out most of the time.

Hastert should be one to talk about soliders making sacrafices... majority of tem are minorities and lower class kids. Does he have kids, and if so are they over there, and how about the rest of the rich folk's kids?

Off topic though.... I was at the club this past Friday night and met two guys from the Navy. Nothing but bad things about Bush from their mouths. They also said that was a constant theme on their base in regards to Bush.

16. Call his office at this number. I did.
202-225-2976

I lectured his aide's ass for 4 minutes, saying that not only do I find Hastert's remarks toward McCain unconscionable, I have not yet seen the Speaker at the army hospital in Landstuhl, Germany, where our severe casualties come in, nor have I seen our president, our vice president, our secretary of defense and our secretary of state there, ever. For that matter, I have not seen the above mentioned at the Wuerzburg Army Hospital, which has just opened a new ward to accommodate the casualties which Landstuhl cannot.

Bottom line to the Speaker: "Just...don't...talk."

Edited on Thu May-20-04 01:09 PM by The Blue Knight
Where was when his country called and he might actually have to pay the ULTIMATE sacrafice....oh...he didn't answer the call.

What is with Republicans and their disdain for veterns who don't follow their agenda? Jesus Christ, they're even attacking their own. (Not that I object to this, of course.)

Edit: To fix a typo.

25. I also told the aide
that Hastert wants to help the troops to fight. How about helping them NOT to fight? I reminded the aide that the 1AD has been extended at least 4 months beyond their year deployment and that their R & R slots were recently cut 65%. If the Speaker wants to help the soldiers, he should start by devising an exit strategy. I also told him to read today's Stars and Stripes letters (not on-line yet).

(yes, some exist, although their politics are wrong) need somewhere to go. They need to start a new party.

No, don't say that folks like McCain should become Democrats -- that would only pull the Democratic Party further to the right. But the idea of that idiot Hastert lecturing McCain on military sacrifice! They're both supposed to be in the same party?

31. Though he's a miserable prick, Charles Krauthammer had an interesting
take on this spat between Dennis "40 Year Old Making Youthful Indiscretion" Hastert. This could be John McCain's way of saying "I'm not leaving the Republican Party, but the Republican Party is leaving me." It is true though, the Democratic Party is the party of economic responsibility, and John McCain might be the most anti-useless spending man in both houses of Congress.
