Irish Bishop Questions Wisdom of Bush Visit
Edited on Thu May-20-04 03:51 PM by khephra
DUBLIN (Reuters) - An Irish bishop Thursday questioned the wisdom of inviting President Bush to Ireland next month and a member of parliament urged the government to withdraw its invitation.

Bush is due to visit Ireland for U.S.-European Union summit on June 26. Protesters, angered by the Iraq war and Ireland's decision to allow U.S. military jets bound for the Gulf to refuel at Shannon airport, have said they will come out in force.

Bush will fly into Shannon on June 25 and stay overnight at secluded Dromoland Castle in County Clare, part of the Roman Catholic diocese of Killaloe.

"Because of the appalling tragedy in Iraq...I think there will be significant protests," Willie Walsh, Bishop of Killaloe, told RTE state radio. "I hope they will be peaceful."

While insisting he was "not part of any anti-American lobby," Walsh questioned the need for the president's visit.

3. There will be demonstrations again him in Ireland.
There have been ongoing protests at what Irish antiwar activists now call the "Shannon Warport", because troops and materiel pass through there.

5. Ireland doesn't want him, Europe doesn't want him
Iraq doesn't want him, maybe he should go to Israel although there appear to be many people there too who don't want him. Poor poor baby.

What I would like to know though is: just who pays for the security costs involved in one of * unwanted visits?

6. You know the answer to that. We do.
Not the wealthy ones with their big tax breaks. The middle and lower-income Americans who pay taxes pay for all these campaign stops, oops, working meetings for the Evil Chimp.

Seriously, is there a country on earth that would welcome this SOB now?

7. Even if it's a visit abroad?
I remember when he went to Evian, the Swiss hired a 1'000 German policemen to supplement their own forces. I would be surprised if Americans paid for any this

and get out into the countryside to meet the ordinary people. He can scope out the local pubs!

Protest at US Warship in Dublin

The Irish Anti-War Movement condemns the arrival of the USS La Salle, from the US Sixth Fleet into Irish waters. The ship is stationed in Alexandria Basin on a supposedly 'goodwill visit' and claims that its area of responsibility includes the North Atlantic.

Richard Boyd Barret from the IAWM said,

‘This is a propaganda exercise to get people ready for the Bush visit. The Irish government has become a major supporter of the US war effort in Iraq. At present over 16,000 US troops pass through Shannon airport on their way to occupy Iraq. Allowing this warship into Irish waters is a further gesture of support for the beleaguered Bush gang.

‘ The IAWM further notes that the missile system on the USS La Salle is capable of firing 3,000 uranium bullets per minute. Depleted uranium weaponry has brought an increase in cancer rates in both Iraq and the Balkans. The display of this military hardware in a world where 19,000 children die per day of hunger is deeply offensive to the majority of the Irish people. >>

12. Did you ever think an American president
would be greeted like this in Ireland? Makes me proud of my ancestoral homeland.

Perhaps some enterprising journalist could put together a short film comparing and contrasting Bush's trip to Ireland with Kennedy's. I would find it entertaining.

16. Just contrast Bush and Clinton in Ireland
Clinton is welcomed (he has a golfing vacation home over there!), Dubya is reviled.

Up the Irish!

14. Bush is Dr. Death. Everywhere he goes,
he spreads destruction and mayhem. His appearances are a security person's nightmare because so many people have threatened him. The costs of moving this man around are astronomical. A nuclear bomb would be cheaper to guard.

He creates a vortex of sinister energy that swirls around him like an astral tornado. Remember last year, in Central Oregon? He was supposed to speak in Bend, Oregon. The day before he was supposed to appear, a mysterious fire broke out in the very spot where he was supposed to speak.

Bush's security people had to cancel his speech. The fire that broke out branched into 2 gigantic infernos which engulfed hundreds of thousands of acres into flames. Remember the Biscuit Fire? That was created in the wake of George Bush.

This man has sinister links to the underworld.

15. A hundred thousand welcomes for King George!
Reckon how the Irish are going to take to the concept of Free Speech Zones? How will bu$h's royal attitude play in a country that still bears the scars of the kings and queens who so thoroughly fucked over that Green and Pleasant Land?

Betcha there are a few hundred Dubliners who'll be carryin' large posters of Bill Clinton, much in the manner that one would wave a crucifix at a vampire.

Oh, HELL yes! Let the Boy King go and try to walk among the Irish. He's going to need all the security he can get!

Pogue Mahone, Georgie Lad!

18. Just for the record....
The vast majority of Irish people are opposed to the visit. The use of Shannon airport here for US military stopovers for the war in Iraq was also bitterly opposed. The only reason he is being welcomed here by the government is because of Irelands economic ties with America. I'm ashamed to say that my government put a dollar sign on our neutrality and the lives of thousand of innocent Iraqi civilians.

When Clinton visited, we packed the streets of Dublin and welcomed him in style. For the Bush visit, Shannon town is being turned into Fort Knox and Bush will be shuffled around inside a ring a steel like the marked monkeyboy that he is, hidden from the protests and true feeling of a nation with its skin crawling.

Ah well, we have elections coming up soon as well, he he he he.
