Leaders Back at MP Unit in Iraq Scandal-Tagubu report calls for dismissal

By Adam Tanner

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The two leaders of a U.S. military police unit whose members were accused of abusing Iraqi prisoners have been restored to their command despite a report calling for their dismissal, a National Guard colleague said on Thursday.

A now widely publicized military report into the Abu Ghraib scandal recommended that Capt. Donald Reese and First Sgt. Brian Lipinski be relieved of their commands for failing to supervise their soldiers properly.

Yet First Sgt. Paul George, Lipinski's counterpart with a different unit that also served at Abu Ghraib prison, said he had received an e-mail from Lipinski saying both men were back in charge of their 372nd Military Policy Company in Iraq (news - web sites).

"He and the commander have been put back in command of their unit," George told Reuters after being in contact with Lipinski by e-mail.

"He told me that he was put back with his unit and that the commander was as well and them staying there in Iraq had nothing to do with any punishment. His whole unit got extended."

3. It's unfortunate that the Headline in no way alerts a reader to...
the article itself. Can you edit it to add something like (Disgusting?). This deserves to be read but with that headline alone, I don't think it will be.

plus, when it goes further, they have some more low-level troops to throw out to the lions.

8. I'm stunned, but I can't for the life of me understand why I'm even
the least bit surprised.

This administration is headed by criminal thugs. They literally belong in the dock at the Hague, from the top to the bottom. Every single one of these war criminals.

10. They would be admitting failure if they punished these guys
Already Rumsfeld is announcing that these trials and so on are somehow bringing harm to our glorious mission of genocide in Iraq.

12. At best, wouldn't this be dereliction of duty?
I mean, how could you not know that these things were going on? It strains credulity, to say the least.

"First Sgt. George, who oversaw day-to-day activities of the San Francisco area-based 870th MP Unit at Abu Ghraib prison, said both men were shocked by the abuses and should not lose their leadership positions.
"I thought he had a death in the family," George said of a conversation with Lipinski after he learned of the abuses in January. "He said, 'I've got something to tell you that's just so perplexing and disturbing I don't even know how to tell you."'
"He was just devastated and said, 'I had no idea, you know, this situation was going on."'"

16. We're like the frogs in boiling water.
Drip by drip, the outrages just keep coming. Things coming out today were hard to imagine 6 months ago, and would have taken down this group of thugs. But I get the feeling that many are becoming inured to this stuff, and are stiffening in their sickness. This thing is going to play out till the end.

18. torture only exists if our society lets it
Brian Lipinski will soon return to Harrisonburg VA where his wife teaches school. He will resume whatever he did before, hoping everyone will forget, and we probably will. Everyone that is except the victims he was responsible for keeping. They will never forget, or their families.
