FBI Bulletin: Lookout for Suicide Bombers Inside the US
Edited on Thu May-20-04 06:19 PM by oldhat
Warns Officials To Look for People Wearing Bulky Jackets on Warm Days; Smell of Chemicals; Trailing Wires from Jackets Bombers May Disguise Selves As Pregnant Women

New York - The FBI has disseminated to 18,000 law enforcement agencies an intelligence bulletin advising police officials to be on the lookout for suicide bombers attempting to strike inside the US, TIME's Elaine Shannon reports today on TIME.com. The lightly classsified bulletin, headlined "Possible suicide bomber indicators," and circulated earlier today (May 20) via the FBO's secure Law Enforcement Online (LEO) Intranet, warns local badge-carriers to look for obvious signs of trouble - people wearing heavy, bulky jackets on warm days, smelling of chemicals, trailing wires from their jackets - and, as well, more subtle ones, such as tightly clenched fists. Someone who never shows his palms could be gripping a detonator rigged to go off when a button is released. "If you shoot him, you're still not safe because his hands relax and the bomb explodes," says a counter-terrorism official, TIME reports.

The FBI bulletin also notes that suicide bombers may disguise themselves in stolen military, police or firefighter's garb or as pregnant women, TIME reports.

Portland Man Arrested In Spain Bombings Is Released

POSTED: 3:36 pm PDT (5:36 central time) May 20, 2004

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Portland attorney Brandon Mayfield, who had been arrested in connection with the Madrid terror attacks, was released from federal custody on Thursday.

His release came soon after Spanish officials said fingerprints found on a bag near the bombing site in Spain were that of an Algerian. U.S. authoritities had previously said the prints were Mayfield's.

Remember that warning? Well now I don't know know what to do, the lady in front of me at the supermarket picked up an Old Farmer's Almanac while in line and I didn't know if that counted, so I really kept my eye on her waiting to see if she pulled anything funny but everything was OK. Should I have called someone?

The one that I remember most specifically was:

“You know, if you find a person that you’ve never seen before getting in a crop-duster that doesn’t belong to you, report it.”

With that in mind-
Did you watch this suspicious person leave the store? Did she depart in a Chevy or a crop duster that didn't belong to you?

***This could be very important***

Look at what we've done - the lying, coercing, bombing, torturing, letting Israel do whatever it wants, etc. What better way to keep everybody f*cking scared than to do things to make sure it happens. I mean, what are the odds of it being one of 'them.' It'll certainly be expendable people somewhere in the country.

I'm sure they'd love for it to happen. We've pissed off everyone. Nato won't even help us. Looks like the Olympics are a shoo-in. Things look VERY bad over there, BTW.

35. Thank you. What Drudge omits:
FBI sources say there's no hard intelligence warning of specific plans by terrorists to launch suicide attacks here like those wreaking havoc in Israel and Iraq. But, says one official, the circular was prompted by "a renewed concern" that fury at the U.S. for its occupation of Iraq or its support of Israel could move some extremists to attempt to bring the war to the American homeland. "At the end the day, it's probably one of the simplest forms of attack, and it's one of the hardest to detect," says one counter-terror veteran.

In fact, U.S. analysts are at a loss to explain why the homeland has thus far escaped such attacks, since a number of extremist groups, particularly Hamas, have a sizeable presence here. One factor, officials say, is that terror leaders still regard America as a cash cow, and don't want to antagonize moderate Muslim donors. Another reason, says one specialist, may simply be that while there seems to be an endless supply of fanatical youths willing to die for the cause in the Middle East, most of them simply can't get visas to the U.S.

--------

Mollifies it a bit (i.e. total and usual BS), although it seems like Time, US NEWS, et al., and of course Sludge will all be playing the terrorism card this week after prodding by Ridge/Bushco and this asshole:

40. There seemed to be heavier security today
New York quietly slips in and out of heavy security days. I remarked to a colleague today that we seemed to be on a higher alert. But I wondered if the 9/11 commission was still in town and we were perhaps putting on a show.

It is a bit disconcerting when your morning starts with the sound of a police helicopter overhead and when you see the squad cars out in force around certain landmarks.

41. I nearly scraped my elbow on an automatic rifle
about a block uptown from the library today. A few minutes later when I looked back at that policeman, who was wearing a helmet (nor riot gear), I saw that another one had joined him.

Heavy duty weapons, but I didn't want to inspect them carefully.

Nothing was going on. Cops in regular uniforms were standing around relaxed, a police dog was curled up resting on the end of a leash.

I guess I could try to get various women I know to try this: "Uh, would you mind exposing yourself to those people over there? I'd like to know if they are right-wing terrorists." But I must confess that I'm not sure what response this particular appeal for public service will earn.

People with Autistic Spectrum issues like heavy jackets.

Other people seem to be permanently cold and wear heavy jackets to compensate. A cow-orker at the office does that.

We're also notorious for having network cables strung about our necks and smelling of chemicals (cleaning sprays).

58. Suicide Solution
Wine is fine but whiskey's quicker
Suicide is slow with liquor
Take a bottle , drown your sorrows
Then it floods away tomorrows
Evil thoughts and evil doings
Cold, alone you hang in ruins
Thought that you'd escape the reaper
You can't escape the Master Keeper
'Cause you feel life's unreal and you're living a lie
Such a shame who's to blame and you're wondering why
Then you ask from your cask is there life after birth
What you sow can mean Hell on this earth
Now you live inside a bottle
The reaper's traveling at full throttle
It's catching you but you don't see
The reaper is you and the reaper is me
Breaking laws, knocking doors
But there's no one at home
Made your bed, rest your head
But you lie there and moan
Where to hide, Suicide is the only way out
Don't you know what it's really about

72. Just when I thought I could go up to NYC
and hang around Belmont to watch Smarty Jones run. I bet I will see lots of pregnant women at Belmont and with what half a million people there I can't say I won't be a tad nervous. Again, thanks Bush adminstration.
