6. Imhofe's master is becoming more annoying by the day, as well
Just the other day, I believe, Chimpy was chastising the thinking world as racists for "not believing brown people deserve democracy."

Today, he assured Congressional Republicans that Iraq is "ready to take the training wheels off" in terms of the June 30th deadline.

Hold their fucking feet to the fire is RIGHT.

55. Operation Mockingbird is still active....
...and the operatives still report to the CIA:

<http://www.prisonplanet.com/analysis_louise_01_03_03_mockingbird.html>

Excerpt:

"Starting in the early days of the Cold War (late 40's), the CIA began a secret project called Operation Mockingbird, with the intent of buying influence behind the scenes at major media outlets and putting reporters on the CIA payroll, which has proven to be a stunning ongoing success. The CIA effort to recruit American news organizations and journalists to become spies and disseminators of propaganda, was headed up by Frank Wisner, Allen Dulles, Richard Helms, and Philip Graham (publisher of The Washington Post). Wisner had taken Graham under his wing to direct the program code-named Operation Mockingbird and both have presumably committed suicide.

Media assets will eventually include ABC, NBC, CBS, Time, Newsweek, Associated Press, United Press International (UPI), Reuters, Hearst Newspapers, Scripps-Howard, Copley News Service, etc. and 400 journalists, who have secretly carried out assignments according to documents on file at CIA headquarters, from intelligence-gathering to serving as go-betweens. The CIA had infiltrated the nation's businesses, media, and universities with tens of thousands of on-call operatives by the 1950's."

50. CNN introduced a new scheme tonight
when Jeff Greenfield did a piece on, perhaps, Aaron Brown's show which portrayed the history of unwholesome interest in death, in suffering, in gore, etc.

He mentioned that in England hundreds of years ago, people used to walk among the spectators at hangings, passing out fliers which detailed the crimes of the next guest victem, and they all fed on the excitement of seeing him get killed.

He kept on, in the same vein, and I INSTANTLY thought, "Oh, yeah, this must mean they are coming out with the photos showing the Abu Ghraib guys with the dead prisoners, and he's doing the groundwork, trying to paint everyone as ghoulish, and unbalanced if he/she looks at them!"

He went on to describe how people love to stare at accidents, etc.
It was one very preachy little piece.

Came in and looked at D.U.'s LBN, and BADDA BING, there's a thread with the info. the Washington Post has some new photos out.

Isn't it sad when CNN (or someone higher, steering CNN) is trying to DRIVE the public away from interest in the prison abuse scandal?

8. You have to...
...in order to take an organization like this down. You have to build it up, demonstrate an irrefutable pattern of behavior and incompetence. Otherwise, they'll just use their failures as an excuse to make more money and become a "martyr" to the fanatic base. Hell, look at Reagan. Remember that this is the same crew that went full bore on Clinton, and failed miserably. They took substantial gains in the House, and turned our government apparatus into a laughting stock and kangaroo court. They've gained everything, and as a result, any full frontal assault on their pillars can be taken down with the complicity or cooperation of one or two lynchpins. Our hopes must ride on many diverse things, not any one thing, or one person even.

13. WaPo has documents, photos and video
Here's the text from Drudge.

Sworn statement from prisoner: witnessed an Army translator having sex with a boy. He said the boy was between 15 and 18 years old. Someone hung sheets to block the view, but said he heard the boy's screams and climbed a door to get a better look. Said he watched the assault and told investigators that it was documented by a female soldier taking pictures. 'The kid was hurting very bad,' he said...

A new cache of documents, photographs and videos obtained by the WASH POST...

I guess I should have said those few that did this make the military look bad. There are 100,000 troops in Iraq and probably less than 50 is involved in this torture scandal.

40. That seems like a confusion
Edited on Thu May-20-04 11:38 PM by markses
If this was systematic, which we have yet to discover with any certainty, then far more than 50 were involved. But even if it were 200, 300, 400, wouldn't that still be a small fraction? Well, yes, but that is irrelevant, since it is not the correct way to count it. If the US military as an organization was pursuing a policy of torture, then the military is bad. Not the individual troops who may not have been involved, but the military as a whole. It is at fault as an organization. And it has to reform itself as an organization if this is the case.

Yours is a kind of twisted logic whereby it can only be the 50, or 400 people who planned, authorized, and committed these acts, or it must be everybody's fault in the military. Given this choice, you stick to the smaller number of those directly responsible. You forget that the military is an organization, a collective body, and must have a responsibility at that level. Especially if it was systematic. Does that mean Joe Soldier in the 1st Armored Division is as guilty of torture as Charles Graner, simply because he is in the military? No. But it does mean the military has to change, and that responsibility for this can't be restricted in the way you'd hope.

43. The Guilt Multiplies as it Crawls up the Chain of Command
which is the exact opposite of the way punishment is being meted out so far, of course.

Those who followed the orders are guilty,
those who gave the orders more so,
the ones who ordered them, even more guilty.
That's a lot of guilt by the time it gets up
to Bush* and Cheney's level.

Bush and Cheney need to be impeached and removed from office
and the whole chain of command put on trial in the Hague.

I don't think anything less will even begin to redeem us.

some of the blame on the messenger when the message hurts his RW buds. Yes he is a RW wacko and notice how he impugns the WP by saying they are "splashing" the pictures on the front page. Where else should such pictures go and would he suggest the pictures not be printed at all? We don't need his "useful service" ; he only runs the story because to do otherwise would expose him for the RW toady that he is.
