COMMISSION MEMBER'S REGRET: We were too easy on Rudy
COMMISSION MEMBER'S REGRET:
We were too easy on Rudy
Democrat Gorelick says she and her colleagues let 9/11 families down by failing to grill Giuliani

BY THOMAS FRANK
WASHINGTON BUREAU; Staff writers Graham Rayman and Dan Janison contributed to this story.

May 21, 2004

WASHINGTON - A member of the Sept. 11 commission expressed regret yesterday over the questioning of former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani on Wednesday and said the panel should have pressed him on failures in the city's response to 9/11 instead of praising him so lavishly.

Commissioner Jamie Gorelick said she was "disappointed in us in a way that I haven't been in the past" after the hearing Wednesday. Many relatives of people killed in the World Trade Center criticized and in some cases jeered the commission for not asking Giuliani about problems they say may have led to the deaths of hundreds of civilians and firefighters.

"This commission would not exist but for these families, and they fought for these hearings and they deserved to hear themselves the answers to the questions," Gorelick said in an interview. "They deserved to have the questions asked, and we did not do that."

Commission chairman Thomas Kean suggested the criticism may be valid.

"It's not that we didn't find the facts. We have them," Gorelick said, referring to commission disclosures about problems with police and fire communications and coordination. "We should have recognized the importance of asking the four or five critical factual questions, not wasting a lot of time in complementing the mayor."

1. Gorlick
later complained that Rudy didn't seem to have thoroughly washed his ass that morning as most of the commission still had a funny taste in their mouths..

18. the whole 911 Commission was an utter scam
Bush appointed everyone and he wouldn't testify under oath, wouldn't make his statements public, and wouldn't even testify without Cheney by his side? What a god damn joke.

12. The Commission lost
it's credibility for me when it accepted the conditions for * to appear with Cheney for a "chat" not under oath and with no transcripts.

3. Kean set people up to imagine they were really serious about this.
People pondered whether or not he could do a legitimate job, and decided to give him the benefit of a doubt. Pity.

11. That's no lady, that's his former mistress......
Judy Whatsername, and tried to install in Gracie Mansion, while trying to pitch his wife and kids outta there!

You remember the truly trashy right-wing media outlets started trying to devaluate his first wife, once he was "dating" Judy, pointing out the fact she was connected with "The Vagina Monologues," undoubtedly betting all the rightwingnuts would rise up and riot when they heard this shocking news, and forgive Rudy on the spot.

Yeah, we were treated to the most lurid, intimate parts of Bill Clinton's affair, to the point it felt we were co-participants, but they were all scandalized that Rudy Giuliani's actress wife was in a production with such an unconventional title.

15. I remember the Gracie Mansion thingy.
If I remember correctly, LOL! I believe it was 911 that squelched the Rudy Giuliani scandal.

Thanks for the photo and the information, JudiLyn

19. Actually when Rudy dropped out of the Senate race
because Hillary was going to hand him his ass on a silver platter, the whole thing just turned into a joke. Donna, held her ground and she and the kids stayed at Gracie Manson. Rudi moved in with a couple of gay guys and went very public with his adultery. However, I'm sure he still receives communion.

6. It's easy for them to say this now
I was incredibly disappointed and frustrated in the commission Wednesday. They had much to learn from Giuliani and Bloomberg about the 'thens' and the 'nows'. There were discrepancies between their prepared (political) statements and the answers (heartfelt) from the police and fire commissioners, and OEM the day before.

I expected better of Gorelick, whom I have had much respect.

I don't doubt that it was agreed before hand that these two men would be given a pass; it had nothing to do with the pounding the other men received the day before, who hold no political office - we don't want to hurt these two politicians now do we? This orchestrated fellatio was planned in advance.

I suppose I shouldn't have expected much more, considering how Bush* and gang were given their passes too. When it comes to politics and politicians, there are many secrets to keep secret.

8. Waste of Tax payer money
This commission is a farce! When they allowed Cheney & his puppet to appear in secret and not under oath that was the clue folks.

9. So let's see
they kissed Rudy's ass while he was in front of them. Then, when it was safe to be critical of Rudy (when he was gone and the questions that needed to be asked weren't), they do so at their leisure. I loath these career politicians almost as much as I loath cockroaches.

This commission is a sham and a disgrace to the memories of those that died on 911.

14. It's not a matter of going easy on Rudy, or blaming him for things
In the case of NYC services like police and fire departments, the questions should be more like now that this has happened, what are gaps and faults that were uncovered and what is the best way to fix them? I have a real problem with blaming the NYPD, FDNY, and Port Authority workers. I personally think that if it wasn't for them and the great job they did on 9-11, there would be 10,000 dead instead of 2700 or so. I was actually expecting a death toll in the tens of thousands and was surprised it wasn't that high.

Agree with posters who see this commission in total circus mode. Hard to expect anything else from a BushCo setup.
