Guardian: Al-Jazeera man killed in Iraq

The death toll of journalists in Iraq rose again today, with the shooting overnight of another newsman from the al-Jazeera TV channel.

The Arab satellite station said one of its employees had been shot in his hotel in the southern city of Kerbala during a battle between US forces and militiamen loyal to the radical shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr. (emphasis mine)

"Our colleague Rashid Hamid Wali was martyred while the team of al-Jazeera was filming the clashes between US forces and the Mahdi army in the Bab Baghdad area of Kerbala last night," the channel said in a statement.

The latest killing takes the media death toll in Iraq to 31. Al- Jazeera lost another employee last month when US forces fired on the station's offices in Baghdad, killing correspondent Tareq Ayoub.
