Zell Miller, miffed at alma mater, won't teach there

ATLANTA - Retiring U.S. Sen. Zell Miller says he'd love to return to teaching when he leaves office next year.

But a letter from a professor at his alma mater, Young Harris College, angered Miller so much he said Friday he won't work there.

In a letter exchange obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Miller told Young Harris trustees he wouldn't return to his teaching post because of a letter that criticized his stance on the prison scandal in Iraq.

<snip>

"You, Zell Miller, are a disgrace to your city, your county, your state and your country," Franklin wrote. "Your attack upon the U.S. Senate that you sit in now was so unpatriotic it boggles the imagination."

"You, insert favorite Republican, are a disgrace to your city, your county, your state and your country,"

This is a very apt statement for most of today's 'thugs.

7. That's pathetic for so many reasons
First of all, who would turn down a job for the sole reason that a potential co-worker has differing political views? That's a level of thin-skinned-ness that we normally see only from Busheviks. (I know, I know ... Zell is one of them now.)

Second of all, what the hell is Zell qualified to teach, anyway? "Cronyism 101: Zelling Out For Fun And Profit"?

13. Frustrated, Bitter Old Man
Zell Miller signed-up with the Bush campaign when it was riding high and it looked like it was unbeatable.

Now, he surely realizes that he has endorsed perhaps the most subversive administration in US history. Everyday brings new revelations of just how un-American Bush and the radical Republicans are.

Zell has become a frustrated, bitter old man with nowhere to go. He is, in some ways, a good example of what the Bush regime has come to symbolize: cynicism, manipulation, deceit, vengefulness, and decadence.

Just like George W. Bush, Zell is going to end up being just another little piece of garbage on the trash heap of history.

20. You make an excellent point - he tried to ride the crest of a wave
The "Southern Strategy" of Nixon began in the late 60's with Strom and some other old Southern Democrats - white males - began jumping ship for ideological reasons. Lately the dormant remnants, like Norm Coleman (not a southerner, but still a flip-flopper), have switched over to joint what they thought were going to be the "winners". Now I hope every last one of them gets left out in the cold.

I'm still baffled as to why he didn't officially join the rethugs. Surely even he isn't stupid enough to wait it out & see what happens, then think he can be accepted into the Democratic Party! I'm still trying to figure it out. Either the Dems must've dissed him in some way, not treated him like he was expecting, or else 9/11 scared him into being so mean. Maybe both. It's another case for the psychiatrists.

Being from GA, I honestly didn't see it coming. He seemed OK before he went to DC, but maybe I wasn't paying attention.

Anyway, kudos to you for having the cajones, Young-Harris!

Edited on Sat May-22-04 12:37 PM by MGKrebs
"My first reaction to Sen. Zell Miller's antics was anger that a lifelong Democrat could throw his support to the other party, but then I considered his political history.

Miller achieved prominence in Georgia politics when the only way to be elected to a significant office was to claim affiliation with the Democratic Party. Its platform never was in agreement with the national platform on issues such as abortion and civil rights. I have come to realize that it is the Republican Party that should be mad over Miller's change of heart. They should ask him why it took him so long to admit that he's been one of them all along.

As a lifelong Democrat who will never change, I say good riddance -- he has raised the intelligence level of both parties.

If he finds someone like Franklin over in Young Harris, a large university like UGA will certainly have many more Franklins.

Zell, you can't escape your actions in congress. Unless you plan on being a hermit, quit whining about being criticized and live with it.

at this story, remind yourself where we're talking about.
Although Zell is much hated at DU, he is the most popular politician in GA.
I will take your bets today, that Bush will win GA. Dumping on these stupid southerners won't win us any votes......This attitude of "we are the smart one's, we know better than you", is a political loser.
Bring them along...don't alienate them.

50. We Georgians are liberal by deep south standards ....
Unless Kerry wins in a landslide, the state probably will go for Bush but we did go for Clinton in '92.

Zell is out of touch. Even republicans are seeing the light about this administration. The republicans who remain loyal are either uniformed racists or religious fanatics, wealthy people who benefit from their policies, or idiots scared shitless by terrorism. Most well-educated republicans are having to jump through contorted hoops of self-deception and cognitive disonance in order to maintain their support for the den of thieves in the white house.
