Chalabi Wants U.S. Compensation After Baghdad Raid
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Lawyers for Iraqi Governing Council member Ahmad Chalabi have written to Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator of Iraq, condemning a raid on Chalabi's home last week and demanding financial restitution and an inquiry.
In a three-page letter emailed to Reuters by a Chalabi aide Sunday, the lawyers accuse Iraqi police and U.S. forces of acts of vandalism and marauding during the raid.

"This tawdry action, committed by Iraqi policemen under the command of United States soldiers and several men who were identified as part of the FBI and the CIA, was illegal and unwarranted," the lawyers, Markham & Read of Boston wrote in the letter dated May 20.

"On behalf of Dr Chalabi, we hereby demand that you cause to have promptly returned to him all property taken from his home and his office... We will, once the physical damage is assessed, present a bill for the damages," the letter says.

"We ask that you instruct those under your command to refrain from such heavy-handed and illegal operations in the future. It clearly violates our client's rights."

It is not clear whether Iran had any role in the alleged use of the INC to provide disinformation to the West. U.S. officials say the INC may have been acting on its own when it sent out a steady stream of defectors from 1998 to 2003 with apparently coordinated claims about Baghdad's purported weapons of mass destruction.

Because even friendly spy services rarely share the identities of their informants or let outsiders meet or debrief their sources, it has only in recent months become clear that Chalabi's group sent defectors with inaccurate or misleading information to Denmark, England, Italy, France, Germany, Spain and Sweden, as well as to the United States, the officials said.

As a result, the officials said, U.S. intelligence analysts in some cases used information from now-discredited "foreign intelligence sources" to corroborate their own assessments of Hussein's suspected chemical, biological and nuclear weapons programs. Few of the CIA (news - web sites)'s prewar judgments have been proved accurate so far.

18. I find it hard to believe intelligence agencies worldwide were fooled
Edited on Sun May-23-04 03:15 PM by daleo
By this one man. I think they (or more likely, their political masters) heard what they wanted to hear. Chalabi is a criminal, but a common criminal, not some Dr. Evil figure, duping governments around the world into nefarious schemes. The neo-cons will try to paint him that way to make him the fall guy, though. It won't fool most people in the long run.

3. The only compensation that Chalabi should get
is a cell in that special section of Abu Ghraib.

Why hasn't the DOJ issued a warrant for his arrest? He's under investigation for giving secret intelligence to Iran. Isn't that a serious crime and national security issue? We've arrested and tortured 1000's of innocent Iraqis and Chalabi is making the rounds of the morning talk shows? Excuse me?

4. shouldn't he at the very least be held as a "material witness"
like that young attorney in Portland. Chalabi's associate has an arrest warrant, he's got to know something important. :eyes:

7. This jerk must be joking!!!
What a despicable and amazingly arrogant human being.

I guess you really can judge some people by the company (Bush/Cheney et al) they keep. The Bush junta really got what they deserved from this fraud!

Edited on Sun May-23-04 11:09 AM by Just Me
,...which further confuses me. Heck, maybe the CIA IS beginning to operate separate from the neocon coup and the neocons (most of all Chalabi) are spinning like crazy.

Salin may have been right on about this whole fiasco!!!!
