(Aust) Democrats call for Guantanamo medical examinations

"The Australian Democrats are backing Opposition calls for an independent medical expert to be sent to check on Australian prisoners being held by the US military in Guantanamo Bay.

Former cellmates of Australians Mamdouh Habib and David Hicks claim the men have been mistreated by their US guards at the military base in Cuba.

Senator Andrew Bartlett agrees the Government should be making every effort to ensure Australian prisoners are being treated fairly.

"We have an obligation to our citizens to make ... absolutely sure that they are properly treated and the Australian Government should be demanding evidence that illustrates that and making that publicly available," Senator Bartlett said.

Last week the Australian Council for Civil Liberties and the International Committee of Jurists has also called on the Government to take a stronger stance."
