Big Four to pass on Bush speech
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/television/brief_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000517325

The broadcast networks are not expected to carry President Bush's primetime speech tonight, in which he will lay out a "clear strategy" for the future of Iraq.

... NBC, Fox and ABC will proceed with their scheduled programming for the 8-9 p.m. hour -- an episode of "Fear Factor," the finale of "The Swan" and the broadcast premiere of Oscar-winning "A Beautiful Mind," respectively.

All they have to do is just show one of his past speeches - they're all exactly the same. In fact now that I think of it, they may already be doing that.

I don't think the majors see even a sparkle of anything that could be seriously new.

36. No-it probably would hurt them more to have it broadcast to the masses...
His ratings have fallen so low, the continuing prison abuse scandal, his face so messed up, the wedding party video, Gen. Zinni's interview on 60 minutes last night, and much, much more that people will probably be laughing at Dumya tonite and turning the channel...

Major news networks are all about money, so they are choosing what will get them the most business or maybe they truly are trying to "help" Bush by "just not showing him"....

I am tuning in just for good laughs and lots of :puke: :puke: :puke:

6. I'll bet between now and tonight, there will be some serious
"arm-twisting", and we may end up seeing one or two of the majors carrying the speech. If that doesn't happen, it will be an indication of just how serious the erosion of power is for the Bushies, so much so, it truly could herald the end of this mis-administration.

Come on networks!!! Hold your ground! We don't need to see more recycled lies and propaganda!!

13. Money talks, you-know-what walks
As someone pointed out above, it's May sweeps. The time when the networks go for their big hits so they can set higher advertising rates based on viewership. Chimpy stumbling and fumbling through a clueless speech with his marked-up face just doesn't translate into hard viewer numbers. And those pretty boys and girls gots to get paid. So, Chimpy and his "new clear vision" are off the menu tonight.

54. That's what I'm thinking
If nobody watches the speech, the pundits can all go on afterwards and tell everybody how brilliant, masterful, authoritative, resolute, whatever AWOL was, and that will become the standard description of his speech, even if he actually spends the entire time sweating, blinking his eyes into the camera, and telling stupid pointless "jokes" and repeating meaningless tag lines.

Not that this scenario has actually ever HAPPENED, of course. I'm just guessing . . . x(

That seemed to be the point he was making: that if Bush's speech was physically impaired (like Hawking's is), few people would be picking on him for it -- but when he's more or less healthy, and still talks like he has some kind of medical handicap, you have to wonder about the mind picking out the words.

19. With only a 41% approval rating, Bush can't sell commercials
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/05/24/opinion/polls/main619122.sht...

Mr. Bush's overall job approval rating has continued to decline. Forty-one percent approve of the job he is doing as president, while 52 percent disapprove — the lowest overall job rating of his presidency. Two weeks ago, 44 percent approved. A year ago, two-thirds did.

Sixty-one percent of Americans now disapprove of the way Mr. Bush is handling the situation in Iraq, while just 34 percent approve.

People are also angry about the rising gas prices.

Let's hope Bush's corporate sponsors start dumping him too.

The Bush Administration hasn't even requested the speech to be carried. They will push the same banal BS tonight and then FoxNews, Rush, et. al. will declare how it was the most groundbreaking brilliant speech ever and since a vast majority of America won't have seen it, they will all begin to nod their head and say "Wow, Bush really clarified his position, FoxNews is saying he did."

25. It is a setup
That is what the chimp-people want because he looks really bad on TV.

What they want is for live broadcast blanked so all his mispronounciations and murderous syntax/diction not shown to the public.

Then only the text of his speech makes news and he looks eloquent and cogent to the sheeple. They can also spin it the way they want as opposed to Dan Rather and Peter Jennings telling it like it is.

If Faux has gone along, it is a damn setup.

This isn't a matter of the networks not running it because it won't get ratings. This is a Rove decision. How is Bush going to defend the recent scandals and the continuing failure in Iraq? It's just going to be more bogus BS propaganda. And of course, no questions = no entertainment. And if Rove hadn't already made the decision not to have it run on the networks, I'll bet Bush's recent spill on his bicycle was the determining factor.

While it's only a beginning, the Mighty Wurlitzer will no longer play 'Hail to the Chief' on command in deference to public trauma from 9/11.

Now if we can get 'M.A.S.H.' back on TV, maybe Americans will reconsider the lessons learned in Vietnam.

Maybe. For about 3 years before the next great adventure.

62. True. The Korean 'War' was a euphemism for Vietnam in 'M.A.S.H.'
Edited on Mon May-24-04 02:31 PM by JohnOneillsMemory
That was the only reason it got on and stayed on the air
from 9/72 through 1982(?). The Vietnam War was going on for the first three years it was on the air. Nam was already considered a syndrome and was becoming a nickname for theology-based slaughter, quagmire, mismanagment, and profiteering.

One re-run deserves another.

Now there are many TV shows portraying the military and CIA as the good guys doing noble things against faceless evil. James Bond is back without the Austin Powers satire. Cold War II is now successfully injected into the public mind and linquistics.

Coming this fall: 'Homeland Security' to continue the brainwashing and re-militarization of our culture. Created with the helpful advice of Homeland Security, Inc., of course.

Can you say "product placement"? I knew you could...

Edited on Mon May-24-04 04:48 PM by scmirage
Fox is now indeed considered to be the fourth major network. In fact, their overall ratings puts them ahead of ABC and just behind CBS & NBC, thanks to American Idol and the rest of their reality show lineup. Meanwhile, Fox News scores more viewers in its primetime lineup than either CNN or MSNBC and claims to have more viewers in the daytime than its other two competitors.

55. Fox IS carrying it! The fourth is CBS
Read the article. ;) Not Fox the TV station, but Fox news is...and the fourth is CBS, who supposedly hadn't made up their mind but is included in the four.

56. Well my local FOX affiliate claimed that the White House didn't ask
for the time specifically. So who knows? (If they ask, do they say, yes siree boss, anything you say?) Or is SWEEPS bigger than any damn war or what?

And if they are not asking for the time, what's the point of the speech? Just a CYA-hey we had a plan this time, but it failed, but we had a plan, dammit, don't blame us!

60. This is just providing ammo for the 'liberal media' argument
if you think it through.

65. this amounts to censorship - pure and simple.

We have every right to see/hear what Mr. Bush has to say and we are more than capable of deciding for ourselves whether we wish to view the speech or not. It is not up to media corporations to make these decisions for us. Free speech? Anyone?

69. It's appropriate that it be relegated to the propaganda channels
...not a bit surprised that the main-streamers passed.

72. They only want to show reality programming
Sure, they go for some fiction, if the characters are good and there's some form of plot.

This is fantasy programming, and although there's some interest, what with "Joan of Arcadia" and the other odd supernatural shows, there's just no room for it.

75. "Scottie", the Bushco automaton
pretty well outlined Bush's 'clear strategy' speech during his press conference. Looks like nothing new, same old same same bull. Colonial House will be more informative.

76. This is actually a bad thing
Everytime he gives one of these speeches the public recognizes just how full of it he is. The more they see of this the lower he will go.
