Arctic researchers see early warming signals
MSNBC staff and news service reports
Updated: 3:01 p.m. ET May 24, 2004

OSLO - Global warming is hitting the Arctic more than twice as fast as the rest of the planet in what may be a portent of wider, catastrophic changes, the chairman of an eight-nation study said Monday in summarizing what scientists have learned about climate in the region.

“There is dramatic climate change happening in the Arctic right now ... about 2-3 times the pace of the whole globe,” said Robert Corell, chairman of the Arctic Climate Impact Assessment, an 1,800-page report to be issued at a meeting in Iceland in November. The report combines input from scientists, indigenous peoples and eight Arctic rim nations.

“If you want to know what the rest of the planet is going to see in the next generation, watch out for the Arctic in the next 5-10 years,” he told Reuters. Global climate change could bring everything from disastrous floods or droughts to a rise in global sea levels that could swamp low-lying Pacific islands.

2. If the fresh water icecaps of Greenland,
Iceland, Europe and North America melt and dilute the salinity of the north Atlantic it may dirupt the flow of heat from the Gulf stream bring record cold to the temperate parts of Europe. If the same thing disrupts the Japanese current the north west of North America could freeze over and the rest of the West coast bake like the Middle East. No one really knows since we haven't experienced it. All we have to go on is theory and conjecture. What is true is that as the earth warms we won't like it much.

3. Here's the problem:
This one phrase:

"what the rest of the planet is going to see in the next generation"

Next generation? This administration couldn't care less about the next generation. As Bush said, he'll never know, he'll be dead. He and his cronies will live out the rest of their days luxuriating in the massive wealth they are funneling into their own pockets right now.

So, Global Warming being valid or not isn't really anything they care about, so long as they can ensure nothing is done to hurt their profits.

Oceans can BOIL at the North Pole. They won't care.

4. Polar bears extinct in 50 years
well, except the ones in the zoos ...

what does it say about our ability to wake people up to the evils of our current policies ... we are facing catastrophic environmental effects from global warming and a majority of american jackasses still prefer their SUV's ...

it's clear we are losing the battle ...

5. Lies! LIES!
Our regime has scrubbed reports which warn of global warming and their taxpayer funded corporate scientists say it doesn't exist. So there IS no stinkin global warming (buries head back in sand).
