Iraqis dismiss Bush's Abu Ghraib plan

Ahmad Hasan al-Uqaili, deputy chief of the Human Rights Organisation in Iraq, dismissed Bush's promise as a Republican ploy "to win the election in the United States".

Al-Uqaili said the most important thing was to end the abuses committed in the prison by both Saddam's regime and the US guards.

"The problem is not changing the location or the name of the prison," he said.

"It's about the staff of the prison. Those people are supposed to be trained in human rights. Even if a person is a prisoner, he is a human being first who must be treated with respect and dignity."

Iraq's Deputy Foreign Minister Hamad al-Bayati said the decision to demolish Abu Ghraib "must be left to the new government" which Bush promised would be in power on 30 June.

Just as I said the second Bush gave the orders to destroy everything Saddam; STUPID. What right did Bush have to destroy Iraqi property? I also read that the Soviet Union citizens are sorry they destroyed Communist things because they realized what a great tourists attraction/income generator they could be.

One of Halliburton's major construction projects -- planned long ago -- was a vast new "state of the art" prison. Next to the embassy (aka The Death Star), it was the biggest project planned. Did Congress decide not to fund it?

His Chimperial Highness was going to tear down Abu Ghraib any way -- putting it in a speech last night was quite disingenuous.

I am sure the Iraqis are THRILLED that His Chimperial Majesty is going to build a grand new detention facility to lock them up in! All hail King George!

Bush will just be doing the same thing he did in Git-mo.

AG Prison will be replace with N-Ray or something else equally absurdly named.

The big difference will be the same big difference in X-ray - People will be tortured but in private with higher security to ensure that nobody else can find out.

Just another case of slight of hand, something the Bush administration excels at with their pattern of putting out the 'bad' news they release on Fridays while anything good is spoken about on Mondays when they can.

Aren't Nazi concentration camps kept intact as a reminder and memorial to those who suffered there? That should be up to Iraqis.

Then again, maybe Shrub doesn't want it turned into an anti-American shrine where people come to learn about the crimes perpetuated by Americans troops against Iraqis.

During the war the Nazi concentration camps were kept as secret as possible. Did they demolish the prison, or just move it? Don't forget who's in charge in Iraq.
